ANITA O'DAY — Sings the Winners (1958-1989) RM | Polydor Verve Jazz CD Series – 19 | FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

For this 1958 LP, Anita O'Day sings standards associated with other musicians, including "Four" (Miles Davis), "Early Autumn" (Stan Getz), "Four Brothers" (Woody Herman), "Sing, Sing, Sing" (Benny Goodman and Gene Krupa) and "Peanut Vendor" (Stan Kenton). Some of the material is unusual for a singer to interpret, but O'Day, one of the top jazz vocalists of the decade, improvises when the lyrics are not that strong (or barely exist). The backup by the Russ Garcia Orchestra is not all that memorable, but the focus is entirely on the vocalist, and O'Day really comes through. [An expanded reissue nearly doubled the original running time with the addition of similar material from the late '50s and early '60s.] Scott Yanow

ANITA O'DAY - Swings Cole Porter and Rodgers & Hart With Billy May And His Orchestra (2011) RM / FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Most of this CD reissue is taken from sessions in April 1959 on which Anita O'Day interprets Cole Porter songs while accompanied by some rather rambunctious big-band arrangements from Billy May. While her emotional range is wider than Ella Fitzgerald's (who had previously recorded her much better-known Cole Porter Songbook), strangely enough O'Day's voice does not sound as strong on the Billy May set as it does on the six "bonus" cuts which are Cole Porter songs she recorded on other occasions (from 1952-1960). Still this CD does have its moments with highlights including "I Get a Kick out of You," "All of You," "It's Delovely," "You're the Top" and two versions of "Love for Sale." by Scott Yanow
