BARBRA STREISAND - Barbra Streisand's Greatest Hits (1970) APE (image+.cue), lossless

At a time when Barbra Streisand's career was in decline, what turned out to be only her first greatest-hits album seemed to serve as both a summing up and a kiss-off of her 1960s recordings. Streisand was not primarily a singles artist; between 1964 and 1969, she enjoyed nine chart singles, of which only one, "People," made the Top Ten, with only one other, "Second Hand Rose," reaching the Top 40. But in that time, she scored seven gold-selling, Top Ten albums. This hits collection contained seven of her chart singles, plus her non-charting early single "My Coloring Book," "Happy Days Are Here Again," which was one of the highlights of her debut album (heard here in the live version from A Happening in Central Park), and "Don't Rain on My Parade" from the Funny Girl soundtrack. For casual fans, that made for a good sampling of Streisand's most prominent '60s work, and if at the time it seemed likely that this was all the hits there would be, instead the '60s proved to be only the first chapter in Streisand's career. by William Ruhlmann

BARBRA STREISAND - Barbra Streisand's Greatest Hits, Vol. 2 (1978-2006) APE (image+.cue), lossless

Between the release of Barbra Streisand's first hits collection in 1970 and her second in 1978, she essentially became a different kind of recording artist. In the 1960s, she made a series of consistent albums devoted largely to show music material, but she scored precious few singles hits, with only one, "People," and reaching the Top Ten. But in the 1970s, she shifted to contemporary soft-rock and released a series of highly successful ballad singles, while her albums became largely inconsistent. For that reason, the hit quotient of her second hits album was much higher--"The Way We Were," "Love Theme From 'A Star Is Born' (Evergreen)," and the duet version of "You Don't Bring Me Flowers," sung with songwriter Neil Diamond and released on album here for the first time, all were number one hits, while "Stoney End" and "My Heart Belongs to Me" were Top Tens and "Sweet Inspiration/Where You Lead," "Songbird," and "Love Theme From 'Laura Mars' (Prisoner)" reached the Top 40. That was enough material to make Volume 2 Streisand's definitive hits collection, so much so that later compilations like Memories and A Collection/Greatest Hits...And More would be forced to cannibalize it. It was also a genre-defining album in terms of the emergence of a post-'60s contemporary pop music that drew upon the rock revolution to redefine classic pop for a new generation. by William Ruhlmann

BARBRA STREISAND - Greatest Hits ... And More (1989) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Like Memories, Collection: Greatest Hits...and More was an odd compilation, not quite a hits set, though it gathered up the big hits not heard on the earlier record -- "The Main Event/Fight," "Woman in Love," "Guilty," "What Kind of Fool" -- since it also seemed to be a grab-bag, including a few stray album tracks, recycling the two new songs from Memories (!), "Comin' in and out of Your Life" and "Memory," and adding a couple of new recordings, "We're Not Makin' Love Anymore" (by Diane Warren and Michael Bolton) and "Someone That I Used to Love." The selection made no apparent sense, but then neither had Memories, and that album sold several million copies. This one wasn't so fortunate, though many Streisand fans must have received it as a present for Christmas in 1989, which was probably the idea. by William Ruhlmann

BARBRA STREISAND - Color Me Barbra (1966-1971) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

All of the songs on Color Me Barbra were featured on Barbra Streisand's second TV special of the same name. (There were some more songs as well, but they had appeared on earlier albums.) It was a strong collection on which Streisand successfully tackled such standards as Jerome Kern and Otto Harbach's "Yesterdays" and Rodgers & Hart's "Where or When," as well as introducing some good new show material in "Where Am I Going?" from Sweet Charity and Richard Maltby, Jr and David Shire's "Starting Here, Starting Now," as well as displaying her comedic skills on "The Minute Waltz." The long medley of "face" songs ("Funny Face," "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face," etc.) made more sense on TV, where Streisand sang it to a studio zoo full of animals, but was still enjoyable. The material wasn't all great, with a retread of "Gotta Move" by Streisand's arranger/conductor Peter Matz and a couple of French songs looking forward to Je M'Appelle Barbra among the filler. by William Ruhlmann

BARBRA STREISAND - What About Today? (1969) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

What About Today?, Barbra Streisand's first new studio album in two years, was her initial, frankly unsuccessful encounter with the pop music revolution of the 1960s. The songs were by Paul Simon, Lennon/McCartney, Bacharach/David -- not exactly hard rock, but apparently beyond the ken of Streisand, who employed her usual armory of belting and shtick, all to no avail. Her usual arrangers, Peter Matz, Don Costa, and Michel Legrand, succeeded in turning some excellent contemporary material into Las Vegas schmaltz and glitz, and Streisand sang the songs the same way. She was laughably unable to comprehend the work of her own peers. Streisand was actually younger by a year or two than Paul Simon and John Lennon. She sang as if she was old enough to be their mother. by William Ruhlmann

BARBRA STREISAND - Stoney End (1971) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Barbra Streisand scored her second Top Ten hit in early 1971 by treating Laura Nyro's recording of her song "Stoney End" as a demo and copying it practically note for note. "Mama, let me start all over," she sang, and her wish was granted. The followup album of the same title was, in its own way, as surprising as Streisand's debut album eight years earlier. Where that record had redefined the role of the traditional pop singer in contemporary terms for the early '60s, Stoney End redefined Streisand as an effective pop/rock singer, which her last outing, What About Today?, had failed to do. Maybe she listened as closely to Nyro and Joni Mitchell as she had to Ethel Merman and Judy Garland a decade earlier, but somehow she re-oriented her approach to music, adapting herself to vocal demands that were very different in terms of dynamics, expressiveness, and especially rhythm from the traditional pop and theater music she had sung previously. Producer Richard Perry may have eased the transition by using sessionmen like Randy Newman, who played piano on two of his own compositions and who bridged the worlds of show tunes and rock. But Streisand herself found something to identify with in songs like Gordon Lightfoot's "If You Could Read My Mind" (maybe that passage about the movie queen) and Mitchell's "I Don't Know Where I Stand." Stoney End was not a perfect album -- the reliance on minor Brill Building material and two more Nyro copies kept it from classic status -- but it was so far removed from what Streisand's fans and her detractors thought her capable of that it stands as one of her major triumphs. It was also her biggest seller in four years and launched the comeback that saw her through the '70s. by William Ruhlmann

BARBRA STREISAND - ButterFly (1974) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Barbra Streisand's first album of newly recorded, non-soundtrack studio material in three years, ButterFly was ridiculed at the time of its release because its credited producer was her boyfriend, Jon Peters, whose musical credentials were nonexistent. In retrospect, the real power on the album was arranger Tom Scott, a reed player who had perfected a light jazz-pop style in his work on Joni Mitchell's Court and Spark earlier in the year. ButterFly backed off from the pop/rock style of its predecessors, Stoney End and Barbra Joan Streisand, but it still found Streisand assaying contemporary material by such writers as Bob Marley, Graham Nash, and David Bowie. Unlike Richard Perry, who had produced those albums, Scott adapted the songs to Streisand's powerful and individual vocal style rather than having her ape existing versions of the songs. The result was more of a compromise with contemporary pop that, while it sold only to Streisand's existing fan base, nevertheless had its charms. by William Ruhlmann

BARBRA STREISAND - Lazy Afternoon (1975) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Lazy Afternoon was Barbra Streisand's Rupert Holmes album. Holmes, later known for his number one hit "Escape (The Piña Colada Song)," arranged, conducted, and co-produced the album and wrote or co-wrote four songs. He helped Streisand to continue her evolution into a kind of post-rock contemporary pop artist. This was achieved largely through the sympathetic ballad arrangements, which surrounded Streisand's voice with delicately played individual instruments while focusing on her calm vocals. The exception was a cover of the Four Tops' "Shake Me, Wake Me," which was given a disco treatment. For the most part, Lazy Afternoon was true to its title, a collection of relaxed performances that was pleasant without being particularly impressive. by William Ruhlmann

BARBRA STREISAND - Streisand Superman (1977) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Appearing only seven months after A Star Is Born, Streisand Superman seemed to continue much of its rock-oriented feel, even including several songs that had been intended for the film. It was unusual in featuring all recently written songs, many first recorded here. Streisand co-wrote the rockish "Don't Believe What You Read," an attack on her negative press coverage, while Alan Gordon contributed both the disco-ish "I Found You Love" and the album's Top Ten single ballad "My Heart Belongs to Me." Streisand Superman seemed to be an unusually personal album for the singer, reflecting her feelings and viewpoints. That did not make it one of her best, however. by William Ruhlmann

BARBRA STREISAND - Songbird (1978) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Songbird was a competent, professional effort from Barbra Streisand, typical of the soft rock style of her '70s work, but unexceptional. Gary Klein, who had produced Streisand Superman, guided a middle course between bombast and balladry, resulting in, for example, perhaps the least objectionable version possible of the frankly awful "Tomorrow" from the Broadway musical Annie and a good reading of Neil Diamond's "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" that would help inspire the hit duet version a year later. But though Streisand now seemed to have access to the efforts of a raft of good songwriters, most of the material here was not memorable. The intended hit, obviously, was the title song, which was patterned after Streisand's recent string of hit ballads. But it was not as effective as its predecessors and didn't perform as well as they had in the charts, only breaking into the Top 40. by William Ruhlmann

BARBRA STREISAND - Wet (1979-1992) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

A concept album of sorts in the sense that each of the songs has something to do with water, Wet was the third of a trilogy of albums produced by Gary Klein in a soft rock vein increasingly set in the synth-pop style of the late '70s and early '80s. The concept allowed for a range of material, from old favorite Harold Arlen's "Come Rain or Come Shine" to an updated version of the old Bobby Darin hit "Splish Splash." The album's number one hit was "No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)," a disco duet with Donna Summer. But most of the songs were newly written ballads attempting to re-create the "Evergreen"/"The Way We Were" style of Streisand's recent hits. "Kiss Me in the Rain''" grazed the Top 40, but most of that material was substandard. Yet there was enough variety on the album to make it an average Streisand outing. by William Ruhlmann

BARBRA STREISAND - Guilty (1980) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

The biggest selling album of Barbra Streisand's career is also one of her least characteristic. The album was written and produced by Barry Gibb in association with his brothers and the producers of the Bee Gees, and in essence it sounds like a post-Saturday Night Fever Bee Gees album with vocals by Streisand. Gibb adapted his usual style somewhat, especially in slowing the tempos and leaving more room for the vocal, but his melodic style and the backup vocals, even when they are not sung by the Bee Gees, are typical of them. Still, the record was more hybrid than compromise, and the chart-topping single "Woman in Love" has a sinuous feel that is both right for Streisand and new for her. Other hits were the title song and "What Kind of Fool," both duets with Gibb. (The song "Guilty" won a Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal by Duo or Group.) by William Ruhlmann

BARBRA STREISAND - Emotion (1984) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Barbra Streisand's first album of contemporary material in four years was a typical '80s adult contemporary superstar release, each track written and produced as a potential "power ballad" single by an extensive team of other performers, in this case including Richard Perry, Kim Carnes, Maurice White of Earth, Wind & Fire, Jim Steinman, Albhy Galuten (the Bee Gees' producer), Richard Baskin, Diane Warren, John Mellencamp, and Streisand herself. Streisand proved capable of handling everything from White's space-age R&B to Steinman's melodramatic overproduction. (He was the man who brought you Meat Loaf.) But as usually happens with such big budget efforts, the album lacked consistency, and as Columbia tried to pull several singles off it without notable success, it sold only to Streisand's million-member base audience. by William Ruhlmann

BARBRA STREISAND - Till I Loved You (1988) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Barbra Streisand's first album of new studio material in four years, Till I Loved You was led by its title song, a duet with Streisand's current paramour, actor Don Johnson, on a tune from a Columbia Records pet project, a studio musical called Goya, written by Maury Yeston (composer of the Broadway show Nine), that the label was encouraging its artists to promote. That embarrassing recording made the album as a whole seem worse than it was. But Till I Loved You, which was given over to newly written romantic ballads by people like Burt Bacharach and Carole Bayer Sager, still wasn't very good. Eighteen songwriters, six producers, nine recording studios: like Emotion, Till I Loved You was a big-budget effort. But it was like a movie with a great star, great production values, and a mediocre script, so how much you liked it depended on how much you liked Streisand, and it sold to her fans only. by William Ruhlmann

BARBRA STREISAND - Back to Broadway (1993) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

While still an impressive recording, Back to Broadway is less impressive than its predecessor, The Broadway Album, for a number of reasons. The first is material. Barbra Streisand seems to be attracted to certain musicals, and here she chooses more songs from shows like West Side Story and Guys and Dolls that she didn't pick the last time around. Still attracted more to current composers than earlier ones, Streisand picks five songs by Stephen Sondheim (who has once again obligingly rewritten lyrics to suit her) and three by Andrew Lloyd Webber. The Sondheim material is worthy; the Lloyd Webber is not. (Though the intensity with which she sings "With One Look" from Sunset Boulevard suggests an eerie identification with the show's demented silent movie queen Norma Desmond.) Further, Streisand has done duets on two selections with people better identified with the material -- Michael Crawford, the original Phantom in Phantom of the Opera, on his signature song, "The Music of the Night," and Johnny Mathis, who has sung a medley of West Side Story songs in his shows for years, on a medley of "I Have a Love/One Hand, One Heart" from that show. Finally, the arrangements and production lean more toward contemporary pop and light jazz in many instances, the influence of commercial producers and arrangers like David Foster. All of which means that Back to Broadway is somewhat uneven. When Streisand takes on songs as well suited to her as "Everybody Says Don't" (from Sondheim's Anyone Can Whistle) and "Children Will Listen" (from his Into the Woods), she nears her work on The Broadway Album. Elsewhere, she is merely a phenomenal singer working against material or arrangements that aren't quite appropriate to her. by William Ruhlmann

BARBRA STREISAND - A Love Like Ours (1999) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Barbra Streisand makes sure there's no doubt to what love she's referring to in the title of A Love Like Ours. On both the front and back covers, and throughout the liner notes, she's seen with her new husband, James Brolin. As a matter of fact, the album is no less than a celebration of her love of Brolin and their storybook wedding. To some, this may be a little too sentimental, but the emotions are genuine, as she makes abundantly clear in her gushing, track-by-track liner notes. Streisand tackles both standards and newly written tunes, including the Richard Marx-penned "If You Ever Leave Me," which she sings with Vince Gill. She claims in the liner notes that "If You Ever Leave Me" was intended to be a country song -- that's why Gill sings on the track -- but, like the Gershwin tune "Isn't It a Pity," the show tunes, and "We Must Be Loving Right," the other country song on the album, everything is given a measured, polished adult contemporary production. That's a little ironic, since Streisand claims nearly everything was recorded live with an orchestra. Nevertheless, it sounds as if it was assembled in a studio piece by piece, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. However, the absence of longtime collaborator Marvin Hamlisch is notable, since the arrangers on A Love Like Ours don't have much flair. Consequently, the album is a little subdued, which is appropriate for a romantic album. And, judged as a romance album, it works pretty well. Essentially, A Love Like Ours is a simple love album, a soundtrack to Streisand and Brolin's wedding that will work for other weddings. It's mood music that doesn't set the mood, but will compliment the mood quite nicely. by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

BARBRA STREISAND - The Essential Barbra Streisand (2002) 2CD / FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Although Barbra Streisand has recorded for the same company, Columbia Records, throughout her career, her work has not been particularly well represented on compilations. Four single-disc best-ofs dot her discography, but the listener who wanted to do something as simple as purchase an album containing the original studio recordings of both her first Top Ten hit, "People," and her first number one, "The Way We Were," without plumping for the four-CD box set Just for the Record , was out of luck. Complicating the compiling of her career highlights is her position as essentially an album artist, despite having scattered 11 Top Ten pop hits across 32 years. The ideal collection would have to do justice to her popular early albums of the '60s, her mid-career singles hits of the '70s, and her renewed album success in the '80s and '90s. Here it is. At a CD-busting length of over two and a half hours, this 40-track double-disc set encapsulates Streisand's recording career in chronological order from her 1963 debut album to 1999. (Two previously unreleased tracks sound like outtakes from her later album projects. "Someday My Prince Will Come" probably got left off of A Love Like Ours, while the gospel-tinged "You'll Never Walk Alone" must have been intended for Higher Ground.) Intelligently picking signature performances from her best and most popular albums, it largely eschews a raft of singles that got into the bottom half of the Top 40, but leaves out only one Top Ten hit, "What Kind of Fool." The singer's versatility and her ability to impose her immediately identifiable vocal style on a variety of material are emphasized in recordings that range from Broadway show tunes to disco. A collection like this has been needed for a long time as a gateway to Streisand's bountiful, indeed overwhelming, catalog. by William Ruhlmann

BARBRA STREISAND - Duets (2002) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

In her lengthy career, Barbra Streisand has never shown much inclination to share the spotlight. In the movies, she must endure a leading man, but in her recordings, she has gone it alone for the most part. In 1978, however, a disc jockey edited together her and Neil Diamond's recordings of "You Don't Bring Me Flowers," and she and Diamond quickly cut a real duet, resulting in a number one hit. Thereafter, she cannily coaxed others into sharing the microphone, resulting in chart singles with Donna Summer, Barry Gibb, Kim Carnes, former boyfriend Don Johnson, Bryan Adams, and Celine Dion, and album tracks with Johnny Mathis, Michael Crawford, and Vince Gill. The material mostly consisted of mediocre adult contemporary ballads that were outshone by the star power of the singers. This album collects all those duets, plus a couple of newly recorded mediocre adult contemporary ballads sung with Barry Manilow and Josh Groban, and a few stray tracks from the 1960s and early '70s when Streisand joined another singer. Her unsuitability to the duet format is repeatedly evidenced, as she seems virtually incapable of shutting up when her partner is trying to take a solo, invariably humming in the background to draw attention back to herself. The only real exception to this rule is the version of "I've Got a Crush on You" recorded for Frank Sinatra's own Duets album, a track Streisand did not control. Naturally, the best performances occur when she is paired with a singer who is more than just a cipher -- Sinatra, Ray Charles, or Judy Garland, the latter two in TV performances. Then, of course, there's the medley of "One Less Bell to Answer" and "A House Is Not a Home" on which she finally finds the perfect duet partner, her overdubbed self! by William Ruhlmann
