EMELI SANDÉ - Our Version of Events (Special Edition) (2012) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

In 2012, Brit's Critic Choice Award, a best new artist prize for the United Kingdom's best talent, unsurprisingly went to Emeli Sandé, a woman being lauded for her crystalline voice and her immaculate songwriting skills. By the time her debut album, Our Version of Events, hit shelves, Sandé had already been a number one-selling singer and songwriter, and had her work covered by names such as Tinchy Stryder, Alesha Dixon, and Susan Boyle. Many call the 24-year old starlet a jack-of-all-trades, and after listening to her first full-length debut, it's easy to understand why. Events skip from genre to genre breezily, often being carried by Sandé's piercing voice. Sonically, the album sounds like a whisked-blend of Leona Lewis, Kate Bush, and Alicia Keys -- but, somehow, Sandé still establishes her own style between the airy coos, sultry piano melodies, and sprinkling of xylophones, synths, and bells. Sandé's strongest tracks are such a mixed-bag -- the Professor Green-spinoff "Read All About It (Part III)" is a raw interpretation of the massive pop single, "Lifetime" is a midtempo love song that's as engaging as a close listen as it is late at night, and the electrifying first single "Heaven" has all the makings of a vibrant dance record slicked up for the floor. A true feature of this album is the sheer quality of the compositions, which, for lack of a better term, are unexpectedly sophisticated and nuanced for a mainstream record. What holds the album back in parts is the fact that its tempo is too slow at times, however, Sandé makes up for it with passion and precision. Our Version of Events is an earnest collection of works by a woman who is as good a composer as she is vocalist, a lethal combination in today's pop music business. In this case, the Critic's Choice Award was well deserved. by Matthew Chisling

EMELI SANDÉ - Long Live The Angels (2016) FLAC (tracks), lossless

Emeli Sandé had three U.K. Top Ten hits as a featured artist before she released her 2012 debut album. Our Version of Events, a multi-platinum smash and the source of four additional Top Ten singles, continued the singer and songwriter's escalation. There was a somewhat similar lead-up to proper album number two. Between releases, she fronted the similarly successful likes of Labrinth's "Beneath Your Beautiful," Naughty Boy's "Lifted," and David Guetta's "What I Did for Love." That Sandé was sought by Rihanna, Alicia Keys, and Leona Lewis, and frequently had her songs performed on televised singing competitions, indicated the regard with which she was held as a writer. Long Live the Angels, her second proper album, is built to maintain her rank. Guest appearances are once again kept to a minimum, placing the spotlight squarely on Sandé's gracefully open demonstrations of salvation, devotion, pain, and perseverance. (She married her long-term partner in 2012 and divorced shortly thereafter.) Sandé visited her father in Zambia and added his voice, as well as a local children's choir, to "Tenderly," a lilting plea for emotional refuge. On the sparse, snaking "Garden," another cut regarding shelter, Áine Zion provides the intro and outro, while Jay Electronica adds a burning intensity over the album's lone deep bassline. Apart from those spots and multiple powerful appearances from a gospel choir, it's all Sandé all the time. Ballads prevail as she deals with the consequences of a broken relationship, lamenting false dreams, yearning for fulfillment, and admitting her inability to simply brush it off. In "I'd Rather Not," she ultimately rejects the notion of a second chance, comparing the damage to natural catastrophes and bullet wounds. Sandé sings with more precision and force without overselling anything. There's also more nuance to her approach, as in "Lonely," where the line "Baby I'm outta here" is sung twice in a row, first with resolve, then with a deep ache. Certain listeners might bemoan the shortage of uptempo belters here, but one attentive and thorough listen presents a clear justification. by Andy Kellman

EMELI SANDÉ - Real Life (2019) FLAC (tracks), lossless

Emeli Sandé's Real Life aims to alleviate, uplift, and motivate. Well-matched with the versatile Troy Miller, whose production work includes sessions with Gregory Porter, Laura Mvula, and Rebecca Ferguson, the singer and songwriter -- this set's sole lyricist -- devotes less time to introspection, offering instead a personal growth endcap worth of support, encouragement, and praise, and in one instance, a to-do list of sorts. Like Sandé's two previous studio albums, it's based in mature pop, but its integration of other genres and styles -- a little reggae, some blues, disco, and more gospel than ever -- is done with more finesse. The seamlessness, combined with full-hearted vocal performances, counteracts all the platitudes and flying-bird-as-freedom metaphors. Tucked into the second half are two of Sandé's most powerful songs, and they're consecutive. The flawlessly assembled "Survivor," a gospel anthem in every aspect, contains a career-defining vocal performance. It gradually unfurls with a rippling rhythm accented with sweeping organ and strings, a spirited choir with some call-and-response -- the (water)works -- as it lifts off. Rather than go the conventional route by following with a restful ballad, the singer whisks the listener to the dancefloor with the crisp disco of "Extraordinary Being." There's so much conviction in Sandé's voice that its stock flattery and motivational phrases seem trite only in print. A couple old-fashioned love songs toward the end, including the clap-along title track -- another churchified number -- add emotional variety without sounding like consolation prizes for those who expected to get more material like "Next to Me" and "Hurts." by Andy Kellman
