DIONNE WARWICK - Presenting Dionne Warwick (1963-2013) RM | Serie : Burt Bacharach 85th Birth Anniversary & Dionne Warwick Debut 50th Anniversary | FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

The aptly titled Presenting Dionne Warwick (1963) was the vocalist's first long-player and quickly established the artist as a suitable vehicle for interpreting the quirky pop melodies of Burt Bacharach (music) and Hal David (lyrics). She met the pair during the summer of 1961 as a background singer during the recording session for the Drifters' minor hit "Mexican Divorce," which had been penned by the lucrative pair. Their initial outing, "Don't Make Me Over," became the first of the alliances between Warwick and the songwriting team to hit the pop chart. The prolific nature of this collaboration resulted in Bacharach and David providing three-quarters of the tunes on this dozen-track album. Interestingly, despite having hits almost instantaneously, Scepter Records co-founder Florence Greenberg initially rejected "Don't Make Me Over" until it began to outperform "I Smiled Yesterday," which had been chosen as the A-side. It was not only her first hit, but in time it likewise distinguished itself as a signature catalog entry when it crossed over onto both the pop and R&B charts, respectively. Warwick's inviting voice was at the core of their successful working relationship, coupled with the undeniably unique and expertly crafted material, yielding a host of classics such as "Wishin' and Hopin'." The version here predates Dusty Springfield's rendering and was likewise much of the reason Springfield chose to cover it to begin with. Other seminal entries featured on Presenting Dionne Warwick are "Make It Easy on Yourself" and the lovelorn melancholy ballad "I Cry Alone," as well as the unique arrangement of "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah." In 1995, Sequel Records began reissuing vintage Warwick LPs, pairing Presenting with the 1964 follow-up, Anyone Who Had a Heart, on a double-play CD. [Collectors Choice reissued the album in 2007.] Lindsay Planer

DIONNE WARWICK - Dionne Warwick's Greatest Motion Picture Hits (1969-2013) RM | Serie : Burt Bacharach 85th Birth Anniversary & Dionne Warwick Debut 50th Anniversary | FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

A fine collection of film themes and show tunes, Dionne Warwick did well with these types of songs, whether she had outstanding numbers or weak ones. "As Long As He Needs Me," "Look Of Love," and "One Hand, One Heart" were only some of the highlights. This was by far Warwick's best set devoted to cinematic material. Ron Wynn

DIONNE WARWICK - From Within (1972-2013) 2CD | RM | Serie : Burt Bacharach 85th Birth Anniversary & Dionne Warwick Debut 50th Anniversary | FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Released in 1972, From Within is one of a few fascinating compilations by Scepter Records in the wake of Dionne Warwick's departure from the label, which she'd recorded 15 albums for in less than eight years. Over half of this two-LP set boasted a healthy sampling of otherwise unavailable sides circa the Chips Moman-produced Memphis sessions that yielded 1969's Soulful. The rest came from a wide variety of sources, including the Magic of Believing collection of spirituals issued in 1968, the title song to the 1969 film Slaves (which had featured Warwick), and an odd assortment from much earlier in her career. The dearth of any hits is likewise conspicuous for those seeking any semblance of a retrospective. The Moman cache is of particular interest because the songs were only offered here. Warwick was teamed up with the American Studios house band: Gene Chrisman (drums), Bobby Emmons (keyboards), Tommy Cogbill (bass), and Reggie Young (guitar). However, rather than working up arrangements of fresh material, Moman's direction would center around Warwick's interpretations of then-recent rock and soul entries. Several of these were more obvious choices, such as "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" or the Motown classics "You're All I Need to Get By," "Loving You Is Sweeter Than Ever," and "Someday We'll Be Together." Warwick's formidable skills are best utilized on her renditions of the Rascals' "People Got to Be Free" and Robbie Robertson's "The Weight," and perhaps most striking of all is the socially oriented "Give a Damn," a significant side for Spanky & Our Gang. Additional highlights include a pair of Sly & the Family Stone covers: "Stand" and one of the effort's superlative offerings, a groovy "Everyday People." Either would have made a perfect entrée for conservative MOR listeners who might have found Sly and company a bit too funky and could possibly have identified with Warwick. Lindsay Planer

DIONNE WARWICK - Love Songs (2006) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

The job of the catalog divisions of major record labels is to re-sell music from the companies' catalogs, and when it comes to a vintage artist like Dionne Warwick, record executives wrack their brains to come up with ways to go beyond the basic hits compilations and exploit the many other tracks such a singer cut during her career. One increasingly popular concept is the "Love Songs" album, its release timed to occur around Valentine's Day. Of course, most of Warwick's recordings are love songs of one sort or another, anyway, but the idea usually is to come up with a disc that will accompany the holiday's happy romantic moments. Rhino Records' Warwick Love Songs album, drawn from her Scepter and Warner Bros. Records catalogs of 1964-1976, which arrived more than a month after Valentine's Day 2001, is really a canard. It contains as many love songs as any random selection of 16 Warwick tracks would, which is to say that most of the songs are love songs, although some are not and some are unhappy love songs that aren't appropriate to Valentine's Day ("One Less Bell to Answer," "Jealousy"). But the real title of this album should be something like "A Bunch of Rare and Obscure Dionne Warwick Records, Bated with a Couple of Hits." The hits, of course, come right up front: "You'll Never Get to Heaven (If You Break My Heart)" (another sentiment not exactly in keeping with the holiday) and "I Say a Little Prayer." For the rest, British soul music expert David Nathan has dug into the Warwick Scepter and Warner catalogs for a collection of LP tracks, B-side singles, and other obscurities, sifting for gems. Certainly, he's found a few. Among the forgotten Bacharach and David compositions that make up Tracks three-nine is "Here Where There Is Love," which easily could have been one of Warwick's hit singles of the '60s, as well as characteristic if minor efforts such as "Whoever You Are, I Love You." Warwick's version of Lesley Duncan's "Love Song" (a tune best known for its inclusion on Elton John's Tumbleweed Connection album) is excellent, and her 1972 re-recording of "Close to You," made after the song became a hit for the Carpenters, is good, too. Still, this is really an album for Warwick completists who will welcome the arrival on CD of "Dream Sweet Dreamer," previously available only as the B-side of the 1969 single "This Girl's in Love with You," and "I Didn't Mean to Love You," Warwick's last R&B chart entry on Warner, which Nathan notes was "withdrawn a few weeks after its original late 1976 release." DIONNE WARWICK - Anyone Who Had a Heart (1964-2013) RM | Serie : Burt Bacharach 85th Birth Anniversary & Dionne Warwick Debut 50th Anniversary | FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

This is pop vocalist Dionne Warwick's second long-player, which builds off of her debut LP, Presenting Dionne Warwick (1963). Anyone Who Had a Heart (1964) continues her association with songwriters Hal David and Burt Bacharach. Her rich tonality is perfectly suited to their haunting and slightly noir material, although Warwick's immediate success with "Don't Make Me Over" was nearly stunted, as the tune was initially rejected by Scepter Records co-founder Florence Greenberg. Her mind was changed when the song, which had been relegated to a B-side, began to outperform the A-side, "I Smiled Yesterday," on both the pop and R&B charts. Perhaps that is why "Don't Make Me Over" is one of three prominent tunes to have been unceremoniously duplicated from Presenting Dionne Warwick -- the others being "This Empty Place" and "I Cry Alone." More likely than not the label was more eager to release a new platter than to wait for a dozen new recordings. In addition to the timeless lead composition, Warwick's version of "Wishin' and Hopin'" not only predates Dusty Springfield's hit, it was admittedly the framework for the Brit's blue-eyed soul rendering. "Make It Easy on Yourself" and the title track to Warwick's second album, Anyone Who Had a Heart, also garnered copious airplay and became concert staples. Doc Pomus/Mort Shuman's Latin-tinged "Shall I Tell Her" and the soulful reading of "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah" -- which may have been the blueprint for the Jackson 5's cover -- are likewise keepers. DIONNE WARWICK - Make Way for Dionne Warwick (1964-2013) RM | Serie : Burt Bacharach 85th Birth Anniversary & Dionne Warwick Debut 50th Anniversary | FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Make Way For is Dionne Warwick's third long-player for Scepter Records. The album would eventually be her first to make the charts and was undoubtedly propelled by the hits "Walk on By," "You'll Never Get to Heaven," and "Wishin' and Hopin'" -- all of which became key components of Warwick's performance repertoire. Interestingly, the latter track as well as "I Smiled Yesterday" had also been included on Warwick's debut album, Presenting Dionne Warwick. However, that didn't seem to deter listeners eager for new tunes. Warwick's musical mentors and collaborators Burt Bacharach and Hal David also presented the singer with several additional compositions that would become signature songs for other performers in the ensuing years. "(They Long to Be) Close to You" became synonymous with the Carpenters, while Dusty Springfield shared some of Warwick's notoriety with her own hit version of "Wishin' and Hopin'." The trio of tracks not derived from the voluminous Bacharach/David catalog include Jule Styne's "People," from Funny Girl, as well as a few numbers from a pair of other well-known Brill Building teams of pop songwriters. Gerry Goffin and Carole King serve up "Make the Night a Little Longer," while the arguably lesser-known pairing of Howard Greenfield and Helen Miller offer the somewhat antiquated "Get Rid of Him." DIONNE WARWICK - The Sensitive Sound Of Dionne Warwick (1965-2013) RM | Serie : Burt Bacharach 85th Birth Anniversary & Dionne Warwick Debut 50th Anniversary | FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

The Sensitive Sound of Dionne Warwick (1965) was the artist's fourth long-player and temporarily sidelined her hits, as none of the songs featured on the album made any momentous contributions on the charts or on the airwaves. This is no reflection of the material, as it uniformly remained on par with the high caliber of her earlier outings. Once again a majority of the originals come from the Burt Bacharach/Hal David songbook, with a few well-chosen covers of pop standards. Among these are the emotive readings of "Unchained Melody" and "Who Can I Turn To (When Nobody Needs Me)," taken from Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse's The Roar of the Greasepaint, the Smell of the Crowd (1965). As both demonstrate, Warwick's vocals are supple and commanding. Her dramatization of "Where Can I Go Without You" significantly personalizes the former Peggy Lee tune. Interestingly, a majority of the disc was recorded during Warwick's 1964 European tour. The British support combo lay down an authentic R&B feel, as do the Breakaways' blue-eyed soul backing vocals, especially on the reading of Roy Hamilton's "You Can Have Him." Of the Bacharach/David sides, the punchy arrangement on "Wives & Lovers" contrasts with the more intimate "Don't Say I Didn't Tell You," recalling "Walk On By" or the elegantly syncopated "Only the Strong, Only the Brave." DIONNE WARWICK - Here I Am (1965-2013) RM | Serie : Burt Bacharach 85th Birth Anniversary & Dionne Warwick Debut 50th Anniversary | FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Dionne Warwick's early- to mid-'60s Scepter Records catalog stands as some of her finest and most prolific work in conjunction with the songwriting team of Burt Bacharach and Hal David. By the time of Here I Am in 1966, the superhuman nature of the trio's relationship had resulted in five long-players in three years, not counting soundtracks and live albums, which would bring the total to seven during the same time. Although some of their most successful collaborations were still ahead of them, the marriage of the duo's well-crafted and distinct pop songs with Warwick's light, supple vocals again resulted in several masterpieces. "Are You There (With Another Girl)," "Window Wishing," "Don't Go Breaking My Heart," and "Long Day, Short Night" are but a few of the hits and listener favorites on this album. In addition to the eight Bacharach/David pieces, Warwick truly demonstrates her versatility as an interpreter on the inimitable cover of the Gershwin standard "I Loves You, Porgy." Her voice conveys the noir tale with haunting resonance. In direct contrast is the joyous "This Little Light," which furthers the evidence supporting her skills as a performer and features Warwick's solo piano accompaniment. Lindsay Planer

DIONNE WARWICK - Dionne Warwick In Paris (1966-2013) RM | Serie : Burt Bacharach 85th Birth Anniversary & Dionne Warwick Debut 50th Anniversary | FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Outside of a brilliant live version of "A House Is Not a Home," this album was more politely sung than most of what Dionne Warwick turned in regularly throughout the 1960s. It was a nice departure and did reasonably well, but wasn't a showcase or definitive concert album. It's long gone now, but might be worth it if you come across it in an auction. Ron Wynn

DIONNE WARWICK - Here Where There Is Love (1966-2013) RM | Serie : Burt Bacharach 85th Birth Anniversary & Dionne Warwick Debut 50th Anniversary | FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Here Where There Is Love was a big album for Dionne Warwick, a very respectable adult contemporary creation featuring three Top 30 hits: "Trains and Boats and Planes," "I Just Don't Know What to Do with Myself," and the classic theme from the film of the same name, "Alfie." The problem here is a double-edged sword, part of which is the packaging that Scepter Records wrapped this beautiful music in. The photo of two lovers on a beach under off-pink skies at sunset looks like something Ray Conniff might have been happy with. If Warwick were on a Columbia Records-sized label, she might not have had the string of hits she enjoyed with this smaller record company, but her albums, like those of Johnny Mathis, might have had significantly more catalog value just from the promotion and packaging side of things. Side one is completely composed by her ace producers, Burt Bacharach and Hal David, with Bacharach listed as the arranger and conductor on both sides. However, Bob Leeman and Obie Massingill get arranging credits on side two under certain titles, and the feel is distinctly different. The Bacharach/David material has elegance and that superb resonance that made this trio so powerful, and some of that is absent from the material not written by the core team. The work of Warwick/Bacharach and David was to adult contemporary pop what Phil Spector was to the Wall of Sound; listen to the absolute tension in "Alfie" -- it's a soft rock version of Shirley Bassey's "Goldfinger," the minor chords exploding in a calmer setting. Massingill's arrangement of Lionel Bart's "As Long As He Needs Me" plays like an early-'60s Johnny Mathis record. It really doesn't sound like Burt Bacharach is involved in this track, and the same goes for Bob Leeman's arrangement of his own co-write "(I Never Knew) What You Were Up To." Obie Massingill also arranges "I Wish You Love" and the cover of Dylan's "Blowing in the Wind," and as pretty and nice as the titles are, there's no denying the album has gone in a different direction. What began as powerful adult contemporary album with stunning sounds evolves into a cabaret-style recording that was the basis for many other middle-of-the-road artists from before, artists who eventually found themselves singing songs Warwick made famous. In other words, Here Where There Is Love feels like it was pieced together to get some product out there to benefit from the singles chart action. But it all somehow works, a credit to Dionne Warwick, who is absolutely on no matter who the composer, no matter what song she's given. Joe Viglione

DIONNE WARWICK - The Windows Of The World (1967-2013) RM | Serie : Burt Bacharach 85th Birth Anniversary & Dionne Warwick Debut 50th Anniversary | FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Dionne Warwick followed up the lukewarm reception for On Stage and in the Movies (1967) with her ninth long player for Scepter Records in less than four years. Conversely, Windows of the World (1967) would garner a favorable impression thanks in part to "Say a Little Prayer" and the hauntingly poignant and politically-tinged title song, "Windows of the World." Both are timeless illustrations of the pop perfection found in Warwick's interpretations of Burt Bacharach and Hal David classics. The same is true of "(There's) Always Something There to Remind Me," "The Beginning of Loneliness" and the irresistibly groovy "Another Night," all of which were minor hits. The team also provided the secondary (read: filler) "Walk Little Dolly," sporting a gliding waltz arrangement that is custom-fit to Warwick's lilting and expressive vocal. As on earlier collections, she expands beyond the Bacharach/David songbook on a few show tunes, forecasting her impending success on André Previn's "(Theme From) Valley of the Dolls." Another Previn composition, "You're Gonna Hear from Me" -- from Inside Daisy Clover -- is included here in an impressive Peter Matz score. Warwick's deep gospel roots are drawn upon as she unleashes one of the most striking performances of her career. Matz gives West Side Story's "Somewhere" a jazzy and fully orchestrated reading that takes advantage of Warwick's innate timing and commanding pipes -- especially when holding that final "...someway..." that lasts over ten seconds. On the lighter side, O.B. Massingill and Warwick collaborated on the camped up rendition of Nat King Cole and Bert Kaempfert's "Love." Lindsay Planer

DIONNE WARWICK - Love at First Sight (1977-2013) RM | Serie : Burt Bacharach 85th Birth Anniversary & Dionne Warwick Debut 50th Anniversary | FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Produced by the hit production team of Steve Barri and Michael Omartian (Rhythm Heritage's number one pop hit "Theme from S.W.A.T,"), Dionne Warwick's 1977 Warner Bros. LP Love at First Sight came closest in pop ethics to her earlier sides on Scepter. Serving as a reminder of those days is the wispy ballad "Do I Have to Cry" and the perky "Early Morning Strangers," which were co-written by Hal David, who co-wrote Warwick's '60s and early-'70s hit classics with Burt Bacharach. The upbeat first single, "Do You Believe in Love at First Sight," was one of the catchier tracks off the singer's '70s records. However, the cornerstone of the LP was the atmospheric "Don't Ever Take Your Love Away," co-written by Issac Hayes. The Barry Mann/Cynthia Weil charmer "Long Way to Go" is closest in theme to Warwick's favorite song, "Windows of the World." Ed Hogan

DIONNE WARWICK - Then Came You (1975-2013) RM | Serie : Burt Bacharach 85th Birth Anniversary & Dionne Warwick Debut 50th Anniversary | FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

After being a premier vocalist in the '60s, Warwick seemed to have hit a stylistic wall by the early '70s. By the time she signed with Warner Bros. in 1970, Warwick attempted many styles and producers. Then Came You, released in 1975, has her teaming with both Jerry Ragovoy and, for one track, Thom Bell. Jerry Ragovoy was a successful producer who had Garnet Mimms and Howard Tate among his credits. For this effort, Ragovoy assembled a strong New York session band, including John Tropea, Leon Pendarvis, and Bob Babbitt. The first track, "Take It From Me," has Warwick getting a more R&B styled production rather than MOR. That was perfect since her voice had matured, attaining an effortless warmth and ease. Here she wasn't so much an interpreter of "great material," her voice and charm were the primary draw. Ragovoy's track "Move Me No Mountain" has a Barry White-styled backing, and Warwick got a chance to be more sensual. "How Can I Tell Him," a skilled, song about exiting a relationship, written by Ragovoy and Jacob Brackman, incorporates a slick arrangement that perfectly matches the feeling of person exiting a relationship. Warwick perfectly sung the lyrics with a sense of cautiousness, but also a little bit of happiness to be leaving. The title track is the duet with the Spinners. The song, produced by Thom Bell, was a number one pop single and her biggest hit in close to four years. Then Came You is mostly an innovative effort of New York R&B/pop that should make anyone's short list of albums that truly capture the style. Jason Elias

DIONNE WARWICK - Track of the Cat (1975-2002) RM | Serie : Burt Bacharach 85th Birth Anniversary & Dionne Warwick Debut 50th Anniversary | FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

After leaving Scepter, Dionne Warwick floundered for a while as she sought the production and arranging assistance she needed to return to her past heights. She didn't get it on this 1975 release, as songs like "Love Me One More Time" and "Jealousy" were tentatively sung, burdened with unimpressive lyrics, or poorly produced. Warwick was also experiencing personal problems and experimenting with adding an "e" to her last name, neither of which helped the situation. Ron Wynn

DIONNE WARWICK - On Stage And In The Movies (1967-2013) RM | Serie : Burt Bacharach 85th Birth Anniversary & Dionne Warwick Debut 50th Anniversary | FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

The distance between the Brill Building and Broadway is literally nothing at all in real geographic terms; the Brill Building is located on Broadway, in fact. And it was not unusual, even as late as 1967, for a performer established in pop music to seek crossover success by performing standards from the Broadway stage. Dionne Warwick had dipped into the musical theater songbook previously, but, as its title indicated, On Stage and in the Movies consisted entirely of songs from shows and films, or almost so, anyway. (In an awkwardly arranged medley, "One Hand, One Heart" from West Side Story was fused to "With These Hands," an independent song originally introduced by Nelson Eddy and recorded for hits by various artists including Eddie Fisher and, most recently, Tom Jones.) And all but one of them actually originated on-stage, the exception being "The Way You Look Tonight" (from the 1936 Fred Astaire-Ginger Rogers picture Swing Time), although several were used in the movie versions of the musicals in which they were first sung. Warwick's regular songwriter/producers, Burt Bacharach and Hal David, produced the disc, and Bacharach served as arranger/conductor. The result was mediocre, both because Bacharach's charts were pedestrian for the most part, and because Warwick displayed no particular feel for the material, sounding as if she'd first encountered the songs at the recording sessions. An exception was the playful reading of "Anything You Can Do," actually an uncredited duet with Chuck Jackson that took liberties with the melody. Warwick's alto, with its dark edges and occasionally swallowed syllables, may have been ideal for the irregular, minor-key melodies of Bacharach's own compositions, but it was not suited for the more presentational style of songs like "He (She) Loves Me" and "I Believe in You." "Anything You Can Do" showed that she and Bacharach were not necessarily out of their depth on Broadway, but the rest of the album revealed that they hadn't put a lot of thought into giving Warwick's Broadway move her personal stamp. DIONNE WARWICK - The Magic of Believing (1968-2013) RM | Serie : Burt Bacharach 85th Birth Anniversary & Dionne Warwick Debut 50th Anniversary | FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Dionne Warwick got her start in gospel music, so it's no surprise that she would record a gospel album, or that she would share credit with the Drinkard Singers, a gospel vocal group featuring her mother and her aunts and uncles. Warwick sings solo on only the first two tracks, "Battle Hymn of the Republic" and "Somebody Bigger Than You and I," before the Drinkards weigh in with her for the rest of the disc. Fans of Warwick's pop-soul records will at times have difficulty recognizing her here; she occasionally sings in a higher register than usual, and she is often more overtly emotional than on her deliberately restrained pop hits. Clearly, however, this is music close to her heart, and she and the Drinkards perform it without any concessions to pop style; this is traditional gospel music, traditionally sung. William Ruhlmann

DIONNE WARWICK - Promises, Promises (1968-2013) RM | Serie : Burt Bacharach 85th Birth Anniversary & Dionne Warwick Debut 50th Anniversary | FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Dionne Warwick's 12th long-player since 1962 was the follow-up to her first Top Ten album, 1968's acclaimed Valley of the Dolls. Similarly, the same year's Promises, Promises was highlighted by its lead composition. In this instance, Promises, Promises was Neil Simon's adaptation of Billy Wilder's screenplay for the film The Apartment. Although Warwick herself was never cast in the co-lead role of Fran Kubelik, she popularized a handful of selections from the Burt Bacharach/Hal David score. In fact, her upbeat rendering of the title track became the LP's highest-charting cut, placing within the Top 20 during November of 1968. The show additionally yielded a pair of ballads in the intimately yearning "Whoever You Are, I Love You" and "Wanting Things," a haunting languid waltz that is arguably one of the most underappreciated collaborations between the vocalist and composers. Interestingly, the latter is arranged and conducted by Don Sebesky rather than Bacharach, who had likewise directed Warwick on her interpretation of the aforementioned pieces from Promises, Promises. Bacharach and David also supplied the definitive "This Girl's in Love with You," which reached number seven in February of 1969, and the midtempo "Who Is Gonna Love Me?" Others worthy of mention are Peter Matz's arrangement of "Little Green Apples" and "Where Am I Going" from the play Sweet Charity. Lindsay Planer
