ERNESTINE ANDERSON - Ernestine Anderson (1959-1992) FLAC (tracks), lossless
This CD brings back singer Ernestine Anderson's first full-length U.S. recording session. The program only clocks in at 31 1/2 minutes and some of the performances are remarkably brief (including a 59-second version of "There Will Never Be Another You"). Backed by an orchestra arranged by Pete Rugolo, Anderson (who was at the time influenced by Dinah Washington) is in good voice and swings without getting very far from the melodies. The highlights are "Stardust," "Social Call," "A Sleepin' Bee" and particularly a touching "My Ship." Although this brief program should have been combined with another Mercury release for this reissue, the music should please Ernestine Anderson's fans. Scott Yanow

ERNESTINE ANDERSON - My Kinda Swing (1959-2002) RM | Serie : LP Reproduction | FLAC (tracks), lossless
Ernestine Anderson was 32 years old at the time of this 1960 session, not long before her career inexplicably fell into the doldrums. This album finds her in great form, supported by a cast of musicians including Clark Terry, Hank Jones, Yusef Lateef, Ernie Royal, Frank Rehak, and Kenny Burrell, with terrific arrangements by Ernie Wilkins. She achieves the perfect balance in her interpretation of "Trouble Is a Man," a masterful ballad written by Alec Wilder, and she's clearly in her element in the hard-rocking blues "See See Rider." Terry's striking trumpet almost provides a contrasting vocal alongside Anderson during "All My Life," while her understated approach to a quick run through "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)" showcases Jones and Burrell. Lateef's oboe adds to the exotic flavor of "Lazy Afternoon." Ken Dryden

ERNESTINE ANDERSON - Hello Like Before (1977-1989) FLAC (tracks), lossless
Ernestine Anderson's first official Concord recording (which was predated by part of Live From Concord to London) launched her "comeback" after years of neglect (and a decade off of records). Accompanied by pianist Hank Jones, bassist Ray Brown and drummer Jimmie Smith, Anderson mixes together veteran standards (such as "Yes Sir That's My Baby," "It Don't Mean a Thing" and "Tain't Nobody's Bizness") with more recent songs from Johnny Mandel, Stevie Wonder ("Bird of Beauty"), Ray Brown ("Soft Shoe") and even "Send In the Clowns" on this CD reissue. The singer's enthusiasm comes across throughout this fine studio set. Scott Yanow

ERNESTINE ANDERSON - Live from Concord to London (1978) FLAC (tracks), lossless
The first half of this CD is quite historic -- 17½ minutes from Ernestine Anderson's comeback concert at the 1976 Concord Jazz Festival. One can feel excitement throughout the performance as the audience rediscovers the talented singer, who had not recorded in a decade. Four songs ("Don't Get Around Much Anymore," "Days of Wine and Roses," "Stormy Monday" and a soulful "Am I Blue") have swinging and stimulating accompaniment by pianist Hank Jones, bassist Ray Brown and drummer Jake Hanna, while a brief "Take the 'A' Train" has Anderson joined by Bill Berry's Big Band. The "London" half of the disc is from a year later and is more laidback and routine, although enjoyable. Backed by an English rhythm section, the singer interprets "My Romance," a four-song Duke Ellington medley, and "Love for Sale" in winning fashion. Overall, this is one of the best in Ernestine Anderson's string of Concord recordings. Scott Yanow

ERNESTINE ANDERSON - Sunshine (1980) LP | 24bits-96Hz | FLAC (tracks), lossless
For this set, Ernestine Anderson (who is joined by pianist Monty Alexander, bassist Ray Brown and drummer Jeff Hamilton) mostly sings overly familiar songs, doing her best to uplift such tunes as "Summertime," "God Bless the Child," "Satin Doll" and even "You Are My Sunshine" and "Sunny." Ernestine's voice sounds fine and her interpretations reasonably fresh, but some of the tunes really did not need to be revived again. Scott Yanow

ERNESTINE ANDERSON - Be Mine Tonight (1987) LP | FLAC (tracks), lossless
Backed by a fine rhythm section (pianist Marshall Otwell deserves a date of his own) and assisted by Benny Carter's alto on several selections, Ernestine Anderson sounded as if she really enjoyed this session. Best were a rare vocal version of "In a Mellotone" and a Dinah Washington-inspired treatment of "Christopher Columbus," the two most jazz-oriented tracks on this well-rounded album. Scott Yanow

ERNESTINE ANDERSON - Never Make Your Move Too Soon (1980) FLAC (tracks), lossless
The title cut of this near-classic album became a sort of theme song for Ernestine Anderson, but it is not the only high point. The singer sounds in top form on such fine material as "As Long As I Live," a touching "Old Folks," "My Shining Hour," and "Poor Butterfly." With fine assistance from pianist Monty Alexander, bassist Ray Brown, and drummer Frank Gant, Ernestine Anderson is heard throughout in prime form, sounding quite enthusiastic and powerful. Highly recommended. Scott Yanow

ERNESTINE ANDERSON - When the Sun Goes Down (1985) FLAC (tracks), lossless
On one of her best Concord recordings, Ernestine Anderson (who is joined by tenor man Red Holloway, pianist Gene Harris, bassist Ray Brown, and drummer Gerryck King) is quite soulful and bluesy throughout this strong program. She makes such tunes as "Someone Else Is Steppin' In," "In the Evening (When the Sun Goes Down)," and "I Love Being Here with You" sound as if they were written for her, while "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" is heard in a very rare vocal version. Actually, all eight songs (which also include "Goin' to Chicago Blues" and "Down Home Blues") are well worth hearing. Recommended. Scott Yanow

ERNESTINE ANDERSON - Boogie Down (1990) FLAC (tracks), lossless
A solid but unspectacular effort, this CD matches singer Ernestine Anderson with the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra. The big band is mostly heard in the background (except on the instrumental "Le Blues"), with the spotlight otherwise totally on the vocalist. Anderson sounds fine, but the material (which ranges from Al Jarreau's "Boogie Down" to "Love Walked In" and "One Mint Julep") offers few surprises, and she is not really smoothly integrated into the big band. However, the music still has its enjoyable moments. Scott Yanow

ERNESTINE ANDERSON - Live at the 1990 Concord Jazz Festival : Third Set (1991) FLAC (tracks), lossless
Although there is no official leader on the CD, this is really an Ernestine Anderson date. Pianist Gene Harris and his quartet (with guitarist Ed Bickert, bassist Lynn Seaton and drummer Harold Jones) romp through Oscar Pettiford's "Blues in the Closet" and then the singer takes over for the final six numbers; Frank Wess guests on tenor during "I Should Care" and altoist Marshall Royal is heard from on "Skylark." Ernestine Anderson is in top form during her well-rounded set with highlights including the lengthy "I Should Care," a swinging "There Is No Greater Love," "On My Own" and a definitive 15-minute version of "Never Make Your Move Too Soon." ERNESTINE ANDERSON - Now & Then (1993) FLAC (tracks), lossless
On this cd Ernestine offers up an ear feast of jazz, blues, and popular music. Some jazz purists may be put off by the choice of material and background vocals. You can definitely feel the hand of Ouincy Jones in this production (although he is not the producer, but it is on his Qwest label). Some standouts are Night in Tunisia (This is one of the best sung versions of this song), the bluesy, Wrong number, the gospel feel of, One Child and the finger snapping, This Can't be Love. Ms. Anderson has a strong, clear, soulful voice with a blues sensibility. The production is top notch. Highly recommended. – An Amazon customer

Ernestine Anderson's Blues Dues & Love News was recorded live at B.B. King's Blues Club, where she was supported by a cast of highly accomplished session musicians. At times the sound of the album is too slick, but Andersons's powerful vocals have enough grit to make the record a worthwhile listen. Stephen Thomas Erlewine
