I've always loved Dionne Warwick's Burt Bacharach/Hal David 1960s catalog but have been much less of a fan of how they were recorded. Although the quite talented Phil Ramone was usually at the board, Dionne's voice is just too shrill for me at the higher moments.
Along comes Trijntje Oosterhuis in 2006 with an exquisite near-recreation of Dionne's finest moments with Burt and Hal. This CD and the subsequent one entitled Who'll Speak for Love capture the legendary Bacharach/David songbook perfectly, with a handful of rarities thrown in. Vince Mendoza's arrangements for the Metropole Orchestra are exquisite, fully respectful of Burt's originals
Yes, many people have recorded these songs over the years, but Trijntje's versions are as close to definitive as you're ever likely to hear. Fran Coombs
