ROSA PASSOS – Curare (1991) FLAC (tracks), lossless

This is Rosa Passos' third album and represented the first exclusive release in CD format by a singer in Brazil. Here she delivers with acknowledged competence her delicate and at the same time swinging style. Her small voice's splendid intonation is tailored to the interpretation of charming hits by Tom Jobim ("Fotografia," "Dindi," "A Felicidade," "Só Danço Samba," "O Nosso Amor"), Johnny Alf ("Ilusão Á Toa"), Carlos Lyra/Vinícius de Moraes ("Coisa Mais Linda"), Ary Barroso, Djavan, and other important composers. Also an arranger, she signed most of the excellent band's parts, with the renowned orchestrator Waltel Branco writing the string arrangements. Alvaro Neder

ROSA PASSOS – Pano Pra Manga (1996) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

The fourth solo album by Rosa Passos, this release has her splendid little, delicate, and swinging voice joined on a track by Chico Buarque and on another by Ivan Lins ("Abajur lilás," written by Passos , Ivan, and Fernando de Oliveira). Almost all the tunes are sambas, ranging from the lyrical to mid-tempo. On this album, she covers mostly her own compositions, after having recorded Curare, where she interpreted great classics. The band is excellent, with some musicians from Chico Buarque's own supporting group. Alvaro Neder

Tom Jobim a été repris de nombreuses fois avec plus ou moins de réussite : The Girl From Ipanema : The Antônio Carlos Jobim Songbook (1994) (trop Jazz), Eliane Elias Plays Jobim (1989) (très bien), Tom Jobim... Os Anos 60 (1987) (bof), Francis Albert Sinatra e Antônio Carlos Jobim (1967) (génial), The Other Side Of Jobim (1992) (re bof)... Bossa-Normandie

ROSA PASSOS – Morada Do Samba (1999) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Bossa-Normandie

ROSA PASSOS – Azul (2002) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Bossa-Normandie

ROSA PASSOS & RON CARTER – Entre Amigos (2003) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Rosa Passos made her recording debut as a leader in 1979, but this 2003 Chesky CD may be her first to be released outside of South America. The Brazilian singer is paired with veteran bassist Ron Carter, who provides a solid melodic foundation for her throughout the date; the delightful Brazilian guitarist Lula Galvao; percussionist Paulo Braga, and, on a few tracks, veteran session musician Billy Drewes on tenor sax or clarinet. While the focus is clearly on the soft, effective vocals of Passos, who is extremely effective in her interpretations of bossa nova classics such as "Insensatez," "Desafinado," "Caminhos Cruzados," and "O Grande Amor," Carter's solos are also subtly swinging. Not satisfied with sticking exclusively to a well known repertoire, Passos is a superb interpreter of less familiar songs like Jobim's "Por Causa de Voce" (a duet with Carter, whose playing is phenomenal on this track) and the lively "Feitio de Oracao." The warm, very intimate sound throughout this studio date makes this a particularly memorable bossa nova release. Ken Dryden

ROSA PASSOS – Amorosa (2004) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Dominique Deret

ROSA PASSOS – Rosa (2006) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Brazilian singer, songwriter, and guitarist Rosa Passos is known worldwide for her stunning voice and her interpretations of classics as well as her own originals. Her last two records reflect this: 2004's Amorosa was a tribute to João Gilberto, while 2005's Rosa por Rosa was a collection of Passos' own songs. So it's nice, then, that her subsequent effort, Rosa, contains some of both. The album is, in short, reflective of what she is, a combination of the past and present. It's simple, too, in that perfect way: just her and her guitar and 15 tracks to show them off. The sound throughout the record is very consistent, with Passos' smooth, sensuous voice coupled with the warm tones of her guitar. It produces a very welcoming effect, and the two instruments complement each other so well that there almost seems to be something missing during the opener, an a cappella version of Garoto's "Duas Contas." It's a lovely piece, but everything sounds better, and more natural, when her guitar enters into the next song, Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Eu Não Existo sem Você," to accompany her. The timbres of the two voices blend together sweetly, bringing the listener into the lush harmonies of a Brazilian winter. The first half of Rosa consists mostly of covers, including a stunning Portuguese version of Henri Salvador's "Jardin D'Hiver" (called simply "Jardim" here) and an equally good interpretation of "Sentado à Beira do Caminho," while in the second part of the album she moves into originals. There are two previously unreleased songs from the 1960s co-written with her first lyricist, Fernando de Oliveira ("Demasiado Blue" and "Detahle") as well as two songs in Spanish, "Desilisión" and "Fusión." It's a compelling, unadorned, thoughtful mix, a beautiful representation of an important and talented contemporary Brazilian musician. Marisa Brown

ROSA PASSOS – Romance (2008) APE (image+.cue), lossless

Torch singing is not only for English speakers. The romance languages (including Spanish, French, Portuguese, Italian, and Catalan) also offer many possibilities for torch singers, and no one knows that better than Rosa Passos. The Brazilian singer has been performing torchy vocal jazz in Portuguese for many years; some have described her as a Brazilian equivalent of the late Shirley Horn, and that comparison is quite accurate on Romance. Many of the things that Horn was known for -- subtlety, restraint, intimacy, understated introspection -- are easy to find on this excellent release. But while Horn used the English language to get her emotional points across, Passos sticks to Portuguese on Romance -- and anyone who doubts that the Portuguese language can be a superb vehicle for torch singing should pay close attention to Passos' dusky, soulful interpretations of songs by Antonio Carlos Jobim ("Por Causa de Você," "Eu Sei Que Vou Te Amar"), Djavan ("Alibi"), Ivan Lins ("Doce Presenca"), João Donato ("Cadê Você") and other well-known Brazilian songwriters. Romance is Passos' tribute to what could be described as "the Great Brazilian Songbook" (as opposed to the Great American Songbook), and even though she didn't write any of the lyrics, her relaxed interpretations of these gems always sound very personal. Saying that Passos is relaxed isn't saying that she doesn't bring a lot to the songs emotionally; Passos doesn't feel that she has to shout in order to get one's attention, but that doesn't mean that she isn't expressive. Passos is incredibly expressive, and the beauty of the Portuguese language never lets her down on Romance. Alex Henderson
