Rhino's Very Best of Betty Wright collects some of the soul diva's definitive tracks, including her first Top 40 hit "Girls Can't Do What the Guys Do," her 1971 Top 10 hit "Clean Up Woman," "Let Me Your Lovemaker," her 1974 Grammy winner "Where Is the Love," and "I'm Gettin' Tired Baby." Though it's not as extensive as the label's earlier compilation The Best of Betty Wright, this album does present most of her major singles as well as a few representative album tracks. BETTY WRIGHT - I Love the Way You Love (1972-2006) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
Classic soul LP from one of soul's unsung superstar divas, I Love The Way You Love is a well played, funky set from what sounds like a huge band recorded somewhere in Miami. It's not all hall of fame, but this is a confident album, with a fantastically tight, funky band pulling out great stops behind Wright, making each song a commanding soul attack. Hidden Darts

BETTY WRIGHT - Hard to Stop (1973-2004) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
While Hard to Stop lacked a big classic hit on the order of "Clean Up Woman," it was a very solid and varied platter of early-'70s soul. Distinguished by the tight, lean Miami funk-soul of the backup players (particularly guitarist Willie "Little Beaver" Hale), it did offer a couple of pretty big R&B hits with the jittery rhythms of "The Babysitter" and "It's Hard to Stop (Doing Something When It's Good to You)," which was about as bluesy as soul got in 1973. A far more off-the-wall highlight was the radical reinterpretation of Helen Reddy's "I Am Woman," which changed it from a hokey pop tune into something that sounded far more grittily proud and defiant. However, it's a pretty consistent record throughout, with other cuts of note including "We the Two of Us," which has a great effervescent Miami organ, and "If You Think You've Got Soul," which weaves in and out of a quasi-tropical groove. The "Clean Up Woman" guitar rhythm is reprised on "Gimme Back My Man," though to less memorable effect than on the hit single. Richie Unterberger

BETTY WRIGHT - Danger High Voltage (1974-2012) RM | FLAC (tracks), lossless
Danger! Hi-Voltage is an apt title for Betty Wright's finest hour. It contains three R&B hits -- "Shoorah! Shoorah!," "Where Is the Love," and "Tonight Is the Night" -- but also features an array of other tasty tracks, including the heart-tugging "That's When I'll Stop Loving You." Out of print, but available on CD with another Wright album as a two-for-one. Andrew Hamilton

BETTY WRIGHT - Betty Wright Live (1978-1991) FLAC (tracks), lossless
When Betty Wright Live was first released in 1978, there was some speculation on whether or not it was really a live album or simply a studio recording with canned applause. To be sure, the applause doesn't sound authentic, and the original LP's liner notes listed neither a recording date nor a location. But whether it was recorded on stage or in the studio, this album provides much evidence of Wright's vitality as a singer. Live became best known for its version of "Tonight Is the Night," a moving account of a young woman losing her virginity to her first true love. But the gritty Miami soulster is equally expressive on Leon Russell's "A Song for You" and versions of her hits "Where Is the Love" and "Clean Up Woman" (which is performed as the main song in an 11-minute medley). Even if the title Betty Wright Live is an example of false advertising, this is a recording that fans of gritty, emotionally direct Southern soul would do well to experience. Alex Henderson

BETTY WRIGHT - Betty Travelin' in the Wright Circle (1979-2016) RM | FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
Betty Wright produced this final Alston release herself, and it's easy to understand why Henry Stone (Alston's owner) shelved it until the end of his association with the singer. Wright, who, as a teen, belted out "Clean Up Woman" like a bona fide tramp, brings none of that intensity to these sessions. A coupling of Darrell Banks' "Open the Door to Your Heart" and the O'Jays' "Love Train" falls flat. Like Wright's vocals, the songs lack conviction, passion, and depth. The lilting ballad "Thank You for the Many Things You've Done" is the most satisfying cut -- which isn't saying much, considering the quality of the other songs. "Listen to the Music (Dance)" attempts to reach the disco market, but instead will have listeners reaching for the off switch. Andrew Hamilton

BETTY WRIGHT - Wright Back at You (1983-2016) RM | Expanded Edition | FLAC (tracks), lossless
This Marlon Jackson production recorded in Jamaica hits on all cylinders. "Burning Desire," a Marlon and Tito Jackson song, exploits the disco groove in an infectious way, the rhythm track and trappings, including Luther Vandross on backing vocals, will set you right. "She's Older Now" has a subtle reggae groove with Wright's sweet vocals and squalls, and Vandross again contributed behind the groove. "Be Your Friend," the third straight winner, has a shuffling beat and polyrhythms which invite your best dance moves. Marlon duets with Wright on "I Promise You," a floater accented by a strident sax and romantic lyrics. An enthusiastic "Live, Love, Rejoice" continues the winning tradition, the title is sung like a cheerleading chant, with a tight guitar adding seasoning. Marlon, Randy, Tito, and Jackie Jackson wrote "Special Love," which Wright starts in an airy falsetto like Jackie Jackson's; the reggae rhythms makes this work, and Wright's singing toughens as the tape rolls. "Show Me," "Gimme Just Another Try," and "Reggae This Way " mesh American soul with Jamaican reggae. Andrew Hamilton

It's a shame that LPs have gone the way of the dinosaur, as Andris Kikutus' striking cover -- displaying Wright in a dashing red outfit -- is best appreciated in large scale. The nine tracks inside aren't half bad, either. Wright sounds as good as ever on the agonizing "After the Rain," the plaintive "No Pain, No Gain," and "Unsolicited Advice." She stays current with "Miami Groove," without losing any of the grip that has kept her musically viable for nearly 35 years. Andrew Hamilton

BETTY WRIGHT - 4u2njoy (1989) FLAC (tracks), lossless
Betty Wright's second album for Vision Records features a stunning picture of her decked out in a white outfit topped with a wide-brim, white hat. She had a hand in writing all nine songs, all of a consistent quality, but none of which are really essential. While competently done, the whole shebang reeks of another session; the lyrics are a series of clichés and street sayings, some marrying better than others. Just as any artist shouldn't put an album out every year just to keep his or her name out there (because if it's mediocre or average it won't enhance their career or get heard anyway), neither should Wright. She could likely put out killer albums every three or four years, but one per year, or every two years is a bit much at the stage of her career during which 4U2Njoy was recorded. The best of the lot includes the title track, "Keep Love New," "Valley of Lonely," and "It's Been Real." Notable is the contribution of former Rose Royce lead Gwen Dickey on backing vocals. BETTY WRIGHT and THE ROOTS - Betty Wright : The Movie (2011) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless
Betty Wright: The Movie is this Miami soul legend’s first album since 2001’s Fit for a King, but it’s hardly a return. During Wright’s decade away from making her own records, she was busy helping others -- including Kelly Clarkson, Joss Stone, Diddy, Keyshia Cole, and Lil Wayne -- as a songwriter, arranger, producer, and background vocalist. Here, she links up with the intrepid Roots crew and several supplemental session musicians, and she wrangles complementary appearances from Stone and the tremendously underappreciated Lenny Williams, as well as disruptive interjections from Lil Wayne and Snoop Dogg. Most of the songs were either written or co-written by Angelo Morris, who has been collaborating with Wright since the late ‘80s. It’s Wright’s best-sounding album since her self-titled 1981 release for Epic, with her backing band emulating vintage soul one moment and switching it up for more modern (and wholly appropriate) sounds the next. Wright sounds terrific, navigating through the upbeat, attitudinal jams and slower, romantic cuts with finesse and strength. Andy Kellman
