The compilers of British EMI's extensive "two on one" reissue series
have made some questionable choices in combining two albums originally
issued on LP into a single CD, but it's hard to second guess this one,
which contains the two albums Peggy Lee released in 1969, A Natural
Woman and Is That All There Is? Not only are the collections
chronologically sequential, but it sounds like the second one employs
tracks recorded for the first one. By the late ‘60s, Lee, like many
other veteran pop singers, was attempting to keep current and keep
selling records by incorporating current trends in pop/rock into her
music. A Natural Woman alternates efforts by two prominent Los Angeles
session musicians serving as arranger/conductors, pianist Mike Melvoin
and trumpeter Bobby Bryant. This is one of those albums that sounds like
these guys (and perhaps Lee, too) came up with the set list by
listening to their AM radios, tuned to the local Top 40 station, on the
freeway on their way to the session. They hear, say, Aretha Franklin's
"(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman," Otis Redding's "(Sittin' On)
The Dock of the Bay," Sly & the Family Stone's "Everyday People,"
and Blood, Sweat & Tears' "Spinning Wheel," and, by the time they
pull into the parking lot, they've got the gist of the arrangement down
and proceed to re-create it, more or less, with their fellow session
pros, as Lee gamely approximates the hit vocals. When they do use a
vintage piece of material, such as "(All of a Sudden) My Heart Sings,"
or come up with an original ("Lean on Me"), they are still keeping in
mind what they heard on the radio, so that the former sounds like
watered-down Motown and the latter has the modified R&B funkiness of
Frank Sinatra's "That's Life."
The atypical last song on A
Natural Woman leads right into Is That All There Is? It's Randy Newman's
introspective ballad "I Think It's Gonna Rain Today," and since Newman
arranged and conducted Lee's surprise comeback hit with Leiber &
Stoller's European-style art song "Is That All There Is?" (inspired by a
Thomas Mann short story), and that song leads off the second LP, the
mood stays constant. And that mood continues with the next track, "Love
Story," another Newman composition, even if Lee, the disillusionment of
"Is That All There Is?" notwithstanding, cannot bring herself to sing
Newman's fatalistic final couplet, "We'll play checkers all day/Until we
pass away." Instead, she substitutes "We'll play checkers in the
sun/Playing checkers can be fun." Unfortunately, Is That All There Is?
doesn't turn out to be a complete album of similar material. In fact, it
is actually a cobbled-together rush job that was assembled on the fly
to have an LP in the record racks while "Is That All There Is?," which
had been released as a one-off single, was still in the charts. Capitol
Records thought nothing of recycling previously released tracks
including Lee's 1963 hit "I'm a Woman" (also written by Leiber &
Stoller) to pad the collection out to LP length. Toward the end, there
are some good songs and arrangements in the art song style of "Is That
All There Is?," however, notably Newman's "Linda," which has had its
gender switched and is called "Johnny (Linda)." But the Is That All
There Is? LP remains a patchwork Peggy Lee album, even suitably paired
with A Natural Woman. by William Ruhlmann

Norma Deloris Egstrom from Jamestown, North Dakota had turned out to be the final album of Peggy Lee's lengthy tenure at Capitol Records, and 16 months after its release the 54-year-old singer returned to the record racks on Atlantic Records with Let's Love, touted as a comeback assisted by a former Capitol labelmate, former Beatle Paul McCartney, who wrote and produced the title song especially for her. That may have been the headline grabber, but the LP that was bookended by the song "Let's Love" and its reprise actually was more the product of Lee and Dave Grusin's efforts, under the auspices of Atlantic executive Nesuhi Ertegun. Lee and Grusin co-produced the rest of the tracks, adopting a sophisticated contemporary pop/jazz sound. Grusin was an expert at this sort of fusion style, incorporating elements of gospel, R&B, and funk, and Lee was very much on board with the approach. As on her later Capitol albums, she presented her versions of recent hits like James Taylor's "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight" and the Stylistics' "You Make Me Feel Brand New." When she and Grusin did essay a standard like the ones she had been singing for 30 years, they made a point of transforming it. Irving Berlin's "Always" may have a 1925 copyright, but here it sounds like the Pointer Sisters' "Yes We Can Can." The co-producers also included a couple of string-filled ballads to make old fans welcome, however, with Lee adding lyrics to Grusin's movie theme "The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter" and doing Karen Carpenter one better on Henry and Felice Mancini's "Sometimes." As for "Let's Love" itself, it's a fairly typical McCartney effort of the period, not as bombastic as "My Love," but in the same vein with some obvious arranging tricks that do not detract from its appeal, and Lee, as she does with all the material here, sings it effectively. by William Ruhlmann

PEGGY LEE & BENNY GOODMAN - The Complete Recordings 1941 - 1947 (1999) 2CD / FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
Although the whole collection ranges across six years, 32 of the 35 cuts on this two-CD set were recorded within a year of Peggy Lee's joining Benny Goodman's band, and the vast majority within a six month period through the winter of 1942. It is possible during that span to hear Lee evolve from a competent but scarcely confident vocalist ("Elmer's Tune") into a bold interpreter, equally adept at blues ("Blues in the Night"), ballads ("When the Roses Bloom Again"), rhythm numbers ("My Little Cousin," "I Threw a Kiss in the Ocean"), and everything in between. Aside from an improvement in sound over 1993's Best of the Big Bands: Benny Goodman Featuring Peggy Lee, the real beauty here is in the material that wasn't on that earlier disc, most notably the small-group sides "Where or When" (perhaps the most beautiful rendition of that song ever cut), "On the Sunny Side of the Street," and "Blues in the Night," the latter one of Lee's earliest blues numbers. Equally important, the band is captured in a nice, close rich sound, which goes double for the solos by Goodman, Mel Powell et al. Speaking of Powell, the timing of recording of the songs on this set makes it one of the best showcases of Powell's piano playing and arranging. Lee's 32 sides with Goodman on Columbia and OKeh have been augmented by three additional numbers, cut by the two as part of Goodman's postwar Capitol Records contract -- they're brighter and fuller, but not outrageously superior to his early Columbia sides; but they show off the work of a fully mature artist with five years' more confidence and skill. by Bruce Eder

MISS PEGGY LEE - Peggy Lee At Basin Street East (1961) lp / FLAC (image+.cue), lossless
This is a lesser Peggy Lee release. Originally it was planned that the singer (at the height of her popularity) would record a live set at Basin Street East in New York. Unfortunately, she caught a cold and her voice was a bit hoarse, so some of the numbers were re-recorded in the studio the following month and spliced quite effectively into the set. However, whether in concert or not, the performances here are rather routine with no chances taken (the dozen sidemen do not get a single solo), and everything sounds pretty well planned in advance. Lee, who is best here on the ballads, never wanders at all from the melodies, and these renditions of her usual repertoire have nothing unique or unusual to offer except perhaps an overly rapid version of "Fever." by Scott Yanow

PEGGY LEE - Sugar 'N' Spice (1962) lp / FLAC (tracks), lossless
Peggy Lee is in fine voice throughout this jazz-flavored set, backed by ensembles arranged by Benny Carter, Billy Byers, Billy May, and Shorty Rogers. The program (which has been expanded from 12 songs to 15 for this reissue) only includes two performances over three minutes in length, so there is not much for the backup bands to do. However, the material is mostly pretty strong, with the highlights including "See See Rider," "When the Sun Comes Out," "I've Got the World on a String," and "Big Bad Bill Is Sweet William Now." One of Peggy Lee's better recordings from the early '60s. by Scott Yanow

PEGGY LEE - Big Spender (1966) lp / 24bits-96hz / FLAC (tracks), lossless
Blending a couple of then-current show tunes with older classics of the big band form, Peggy Lee's 1966 LP Big $pender occasionally rose its head above the level of kitsch -- and much more so than 1965's Pass Me By. It's tough to blame Lee herself; while the arrangements (including work by Dave Grusin and Bill Holman) are mostly successful, again and again the accompaniment descends into rote repetition of the usual rock motifs. The blaring brass of the title track make it a highlight, though, and Lee sounds positively jubilant while singing a genuine standard ("Let's Fall in Love") over a conservative arrangement. A few pearls among the swine are hardly enough to recommend this record. by John Bush

PEGGY LEE - Norma Deloris Egstrom from Jamestown North Dakota (1972) lp / 24bits-96hz / FLAC (tracks), lossless
Peggy Lee returns to her roots, at least by name and location, with Norma Deloris Egstrom from Jamestown, North Dakota, reminding fans of the name and place on her birth certificate. The album is credited as "produced & conceived by Tom Catalano." Maybe Catalano's conception was the LP title. If he also chose the songs and the arranger/conductor, he didn't really do much different from recent Peggy Lee albums, however. Once again, the collection is a mixture of contemporary material with songs Lee might have sung back at the start of her career in the 1940s. Arranger/conductor Artie Butler employs a studio of jazz-pop session aces like guitarist Larry Carlton, pianist Michael Omartian, percussionist Victor Feldman, and drummer Earl Palmer, then adds horn and string charts at various points. Early-‘70s pop stars like the Carpenters, Elton John, and Leon Russell are evoked in selections like the leadoff track, Lesley Duncan's "Love Song" (most prominently heard on John's 1971 album Tumbleweed Connection), Russell's "A Song for You," and his and Bonnie Bramlett's groupie lament "Superstar," a hit for the Carpenters. While Butler tries for unusual arrangements in spots, there isn't much that Lee can do with such songs that hasn't been done already, and she settles for rendering them in her calm, precise voice. Not surprisingly, she sounds much more at home in the album's second half, when she gets a chance to handle more vintage songs such as Lil Hardin Armstrong's 1939 copyright "Just for a Thrill," and the album comes to a close with a double shot of such nostalgia, combining two 1940s hits, "The More I See You" and "I'll Be Seeing You." Thus, does Lee, in the hands of Catalano and Butler, continue to try to bridge the old with the new, and she continues to succeed modestly. [Norma Deloris Egstrom from Jamestown, North Dakota turned out to be Peggy Lee's final recording for Capitol Records, a label she joined in 1945 and stayed with, except for a five-year stint at Decca, 1952-1957, through 1972.] by William Ruhlmann

PEGGY LEE - Close Enough for Love (1980) FLAC (tracks), lossless
Peggy Lee's 1979 album Close Enough for Love is a disco-themed take on her classic themes of love and romance. "You" is a light, mellow funk ballad, while the standard "Just One of Those Things" becomes a propulsive dance anthem. Those looking for songs similar to Lee's trademark "Fever" will want to add the smoldering, sexy "Easy Does It" to their collection. Peggy Lee's voice sounds a bit depressed on this album, indicating, perhaps, an unfamiliarity with the new musical trappings. But that quality also gives the album's more straightforward numbers, like "Rain Sometimes" and "Come in From the Rain" (sounding like Wings), a moving, somber tone. An example of a dated album, but one that is a ripe for a rediscovery. by JT Griffith

MISS PEGGY LEE - Peggy Lee Sings The Blues (1988) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
By 1988, 68-year-old Peggy Lee did not have much of a voice left. Although she was still determined, physical problems had weakened her, and despite Gene Lees' absurd raving in the liner notes ("Her work has never flagged, the quality of it has never faltered"), this set finds her way past her prime. Actually, the material (only half of which is actually blues) is pretty strong -- mostly standards from the 1920s and '30s -- and the backup group (a quintet with pianist Mike Renzi and guitarist John Chiodini) does a good job of supporting Lee's quiet and often weak voice. This is one of the better releases from Peggy Lee's later years, but it still pales next to her 1950s recordings. by Scott Yanow

PEGGY LEE - Peggy Lee with the Dave Barbour Band (1991) FLAC (tracks), lossless
In the late '40s, Peggy Lee launched a successful solo singing career on records and radio without doing much in the way of live performing. As a part of that, she made a lot of transcriptions for radio play, backed by a small jazz band led by her guitarist-husband Dave Barbour. This budget compilation contains 14 of the "MacGregor" transcriptions, on which Lee addresses standards like "I Should Care," "September In The Rain," and "Nice Work If You Can Get It," with generous soloing space given to the band. by William Ruhlmann

PEGGY LEE - Moments Like This (1993) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
At this late point in Peggy Lee's career, she was heard best in small doses, singing an emotional ballad for three minutes (such as on "The Folks Who Live on the Hill"). This full-length CD, Moments Like This, finds Lee revisiting her former heights (such as her remakes of "Why Don't You Do Right" and "Mañana (Is Soon Enough for Me)"), but without the voice to pull it off. Pianist Mike Renzi provided the sympathetic arrangements for the rhythm section, and saxophonist Gerry Niewood helps out, but the main focus is on the aging singer (then 72), and despite her sincerity, the voice was no longer there. by Scott Yanow

PEGGY LEE - Spotlight on Peggy Lee 'Great Ladies of Song' (1995) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
Peggy Lee spent a good many years with Capitol, and it was there that she cut some of her best sides. Save for a few years in the late '40s (and several early hits), Lee hit her stride with the label during the end of the '50s and throughout the '60s. Working in a variety of settings, from string orchestras to jazz combos, Lee applied her vocal talents to swing, blues, Latin, and cabaret. This edition of Capitol's classy Spotlight series rounds up 18 of Lee's best performances. And while many of the hits are missing ("Black Coffee," "Is That All There Is," etc.), the disc makes up for it with stunners like "The Best Is Yet to Come" and "The Folks Who Live on the Hill." Plus, there's the charts and conducting work of such luminaries as Benny Carter, Nelson Riddle, Bill May, Quincy Jones, and even Frank Sinatra. A fine sampler from Miss Lee's prime. by Stephen Cook

PEGGY LEE - Sings Leiber & Stoller (2006) FLAC (tracks), lossless
While Peggy Lee and the songs of Leiber & Stoller seem like an ideal match, and they did result in the still-spooky hit "Is That All There Is," unfortunately the singer was way past her prime by the time she performed most of this material. The reissue starts out strong with a rousing "Kansas City," but that is one of only two songs that date from 1962. With the exception of the 1969 hit, the rest of the program (which does not list the personnel of the orchestras) is from the mid-'70s when Lee's voice had shrunk to an alarming level where it was barely above a whisper. While she does her best, she was simply not strong enough for most of this material. by Scott Yanow
