DIANA ROSS - Diana (Rarities Edition) (2010) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

The packaging of this set is confusingly identical to that of Diana, but it contains none of material from Diana Ross' 1980 studio album. Instead, it's an individual release of the second disc from that album's deluxe edition. Since the original Chic mixes appeared on the deluxe edition's first disc, none of them can be heard here, but this is a valuable compilation on its own, as it collects stray parts from Ross' discography recorded just before and shortly after Diana. This includes an extended alternate mix of "Love Hangover," a ten-minute 1977 medley of Supremes hits, and 12" versions of "I Ain't Been Licked" and "What You Gave Me," two songs written by Ashford & Simpson. Serious fans should seek out the two-disc deluxe edition of Diana; the Chic mixes, and the story behind their shelving, are fascinating. by Andy Kellman

DIANA ROSS & MARVIN GAYE - Diana & Marvin (1973-2009) SHM-CD / FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

By the early '70s, Diana Ross and Marvin Gaye were in completely different creative territories. Ross was settling down as a professional diva, while Gaye was pushing his art forward with What's Going On, Trouble Man, and Let's Get It On. What they shared, apart from a mutual admiration, was that they were two of the biggest artists on Motown and that their voices sounded terrific together. So it wasn't entirely surprising that the duo teamed up in 1973 for the Diana & Marvin album. Although the album didn't produce any timeless classics, the results were still very good -- good enough for the record to be one of Ross' best efforts of the era. The highlights are the three singles ("You're a Special Part of Me," "My Mistake (Was to Love You)," "Don't Knock My Love"), but even the weaker tunes are redeemed by the duo's indelible chemistry, and that's the reason why it's worth a listen. by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

DIANA ROSS - Diana Ross (1976-1997) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

This self-titled release, issued in February 1976, was Diana Ross' first album since December 1973's Last Time I Saw Him. It followed Ross' starring role in the Berry Gordy-directed Mahogany. That film's theme, a sweeping Gerry Goffin/Michael Masser ballad sung by Ross, topped Billboard's Adult Contemporary and Hot 100 charts; though it appeared on the Mahogany soundtrack, it was also included here and leads a set that's as diverse as Last Time I Saw Him, with a total of nine songs involving 16 songwriters. "I Thought It Took a Little Time (But Today I Fell in Love)," a stately ballad with a commanding chorus, was a Top Five Adult Contemporary hit but wasn't nearly as successful with R&B radio. "Love Hangover," with its extended lead-in and hurtling and thumping yet graceful groove, was Ross' entry into the disco market, where she proved to be a natural fit, and it not only topped the dance chart but the R&B and pop ones as well. "Kiss Me Now" is another highlight, a frisky, showbiz jazz number where Ross feels free enough to throw in a quick impression of Louis Armstrong. That covers the album's first side. Side two is much more focused, generally sticking to contemporary soul. "One Love in My Lifetime," yet another one of Ross' Top Ten R&B singles, is the most notable of the five songs, with the Ashford & Simpson-penned "Ain't Nothin' But a Maybe" a close second. Subsequently mired in a couple unfocused patchwork recordings, Ross wouldn't make another truly fine album until The Boss, written and produced in its entirety by Ashford & Simpson. by Andy Kellman

DIANA ROSS - Baby, It's Me (1977-1994) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

A moderately successful late-'70s album for Diana Ross. She was evolving into celebrity/stardom status, and her albums were increasingly filled with less soulful, more sophisticated, heavily produced and arranged ballads and light pop. She still sounded glorious on most of them, but now the edge, sensuality, and energy that had made her Motown songs classics was steadily eroding in favor of a more stylized, almost show-business kind of singing. by Ron Wynn

DIANA ROSS - The Boss (1980-1999) RM / FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Ashford & Simpson wrote and produced almost all of the material for Diana Ross' self-titled debut and third album Surrender, LPs that were almost a decade old by the time the trio reunited for The Boss. The duo and the singer prospered during the time apart. They had proven to be more than adept at disco -- Ross' "Love Hangover" and Ashford & Simpson's "One More Try" coincidentally were on the Billboard disco chart together in 1976 -- so the reunited unit's prospects in 1979 were high. Ross' first solo gold album, The Boss contains some of her most commanding and seductive material. The charging title song was a Top 20 hit, the album's only single to crack the Hot 100, but the dazzling "No One Gets the Prize" and lighter "It's My House" -- both of which also topped the disco chart -- add much depth. Ross' charisma was so powerful during this era that she was able to make lines like "There's my chair/I put it there" not sound ridiculous. "Sparkle," the best of the three ballads, is an original, not a cover of the Curtis Mayfield-written song from the Supremes-inspired film of the same title. by Andy Kellman

DIANA ROSS - Diana (1980-1999) RM / FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Diana Ross would probably be offended by anyone who called her 1980 smash Diana a comeback, but let's face it -- after the flop of The Wiz, and the way that the disco revolution steamrollered so many of her Motown compatriots' careers, that's exactly what it was. Wisely hooking up with Chic's Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards (both the most traditionally rooted and most fearless of the major disco-era producers), Ross sounds more forceful than she had in years. The helium-toned style of her early hits with the Supremes is worlds away from the assertive way she rips into the funky hit "Upside Down." Even better, the joyous, celebratory "I'm Coming Out" is probably the best solo track of her career, and the heartfelt "Now That You're Gone" is one of her most subtle ballads. The glossy Chic production might sound a bit dated to some ears, but it's matured much better than many similar albums of the era. Overall, this is, in many ways, Diana Ross' best solo record. by Charity Stafford

DIANA ROSS - Why Do Fools Fall In Love (1981-2005) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

The irony of a 37-year-old woman having a huge hit covering an anthem for a bunch of teenagers aside, Diana Ross enjoyed tremendous success with this early '80s album. It was her second platinum album of the 1980s and eventually did better than any other full album she issued in the decade, except for Diana. It also started Ross on a run of youthful hits that would include "Work That Body," "Mirror, Mirror," and the ultimate vanity song, "Muscles." by Ron Wynn

DIANA ROSS - Silk Electric (1982-2005) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Diana Ross continued her steady pace in the early '80s, scoring a hit single with the curious song "Muscles." She was now established as a stylist and show business celebrity, and seldom evoked the soulful or sensual air that characterized her past material. The songs were also more elaborately produced, the arrangements designed to accent the carefully calculated pauses, sighs, and coos, and the compositions more suggestive in their lyrics than convincing or compelling. by Ron Wynn

DIANA ROSS - Ross (1983-2005) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

A noble, if failed, experiment. Diana Ross teamed up with Steely Dan producer Gary Katz for this, her third outing on RCA. Katz brought in the usual suspects, not only buddies like Michael McDonald and Donald Fagen (each of whom contributed a song and keyboards), but also session aces like Jeff Porcaro and Greg Phillinganes. The result, on the five tracks Katz handled, has that precise, icy sound those guys always get, not a sound that meshes well with Ross. No better are the two tracks contributed by Ray Parker, Jr., or Ross' own effort, "Girls," which closes things out. As a result, Ross was Diana Ross' first album since 1978 not to even go gold. (Not to be confused with Diana Ross' 1978 album [Motown 907] of the same name.) by William Ruhlmann

DIANA ROSS - Eaten Alive (1985) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Diana Ross got a lot of mileage from this album, although it didn't duplicate the success she'd enjoyed with Swept Away. The title track was a Top Ten R&B hit, thanks in part to Michael Jackson's presence on background vocals, and another single also made the charts. Ross wasn't the powerhouse she was in the 1970s, but she was still doing well enough to keep making records. by Ron Wynn

DIANA ROSS - Red Hot Rhythm And Blues (1987-2005) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Diana Ross made one of her better albums in quite a while, although this late-'80s number didn't fare as well as anticipated. But "It's Hard For Me to Say," aco-produced and co-written with Luther Vandross, was the first heartache tune Ross had done in many years with a real, poignant edge to it, while "Cross My Heart" was a decent commercial number. Of course, the tune that ended up making the most noise was "Dirty Looks," another of Ross' patented cute, quasi-sophisticated numbers. by Ron Wynn

DIANA ROSS - Workin' Overtime (1989) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Diana Ross made a bid for new stardom by returning to Motown with a deal giving her profit participation in the company and creative control in 1989. This album was the first product of that new contract, and the results weren't very encouraging. There were no moderate or even small hits, and the album quickly dropped off both the R&B and pop charts within a couple of weeks of its release. Ross sounded completely lost, and the production, arrangements, and compositions sounded weak and thin next to the dominant New Jack and hip-hop works. by Ron Wynn

DIANA ROSS - The Force Behind the Power (1991) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

On her first album of the '90s, Diana Ross attempted to keep up with the times, adding light New Jack beats and synthesized urban contemporary arrangements. It may have been a good idea in theory, but The Force Behind the Power fails in practice. Most of the music sounds too carefully considered, and Ross never quite sounds comfortable with the new sonic surface. Another problem is the material -- most of it is simply not memorable. And when there is a good song, like Nick Lowe's "Battlefield," it's destroyed in the arrangements. There are a couple of moments where it seems like it's going to all come together, but for the most part, The Force Behind the Power is a bungled attempt at contemporizing Miss Ross. And it's questionable whether such an effort was necessary in the first place. [The U.K. edition of The Force Behind the Power has an additional song, "No Matter What You Do," which is a duet with Al B. Sure!.] by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

DIANA ROSS - Take Me Higher (1995-2005) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Take Me Higher, Diana Ross's 19th new studio album since launching her solo career in 1970 and her first in four years, was, like her last two (Workin' Overtime and The Force Behind the Power), a commercial disaster, barely making the charts. Combining tbe work of four separate producers who mostly tried to fit Ross into contemporary dance trends, the album did feature a club bit in the title song, while the ballad "Gone" made the Top 40 in the U.K. But Ross herself seemed to have spent more time posing for the many fashion shots in the booklet than singing tbe pedestrian songs. by William Ruhlmann

DIANA ROSS - Every Day Is a New Day (1999) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Diana Ross remained a larger-than-life figure throughout the '90s, but she hadn't had a major hit since 1986. Every Day Is a New Day was designed to change that. Released in 1999, the record was her most carefully conceived album in years, filled with immaculate productions that appealed either to the dancefloor or adult contemporary radio. The problem is, there wasn't much to recommend in the way of songs. Although the album sounds good, nothing on it truly catches hold the way even such latter-day hits as "Missing You," "Swept Away" and "Muscles" did. As a result, Every Day Is a New Day stands as nothing more than a stylish but failed comeback. by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

DIANA ROSS - I Love You (2006) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

In what might be the least inspired album of her career, iconic diva Diana Ross sleepwalks through a mishmash of seemingly randomly chosen love songs, all covers save for one new composition, adding nothing to them and forcing one to wonder just why she bothered. It's been standard music industry practice for years for artists to record (or for their labels to release compilations of) romantic tunes in time for Valentine's Day, and the January 2007 arrival of this set couldn't have been better timed as it also coincided with the release of the film version of Dreamgirls, based on the career of the Supremes. But Ross doesn't seize the moment: she puts little emotion or enthusiasm into her recitations here, and seems to have little familiarity with, or understanding of, the songs she and producers Peter Asher and Steve Tyrell have chosen for the album. Her vocals are largely nondescript and at times barely hint at the qualities that made her such a distinctive force for decades, and the arrangements and production are whitewashed and lacking in originality. The material is all over the place, including songs from the '50s to those of more recent vintage, from the Platters' "Only You" through Berlin's "Take My Breath Away," and from fellow Motown great Marvin Gaye's "I Want You" to the ubiquitous (and, at this point, plain annoying) "You Are So Beautiful." Ross takes Jackie Wilson's "To Be Loved" and bleeds the soul from it, and she drains the magic from the Drifters' classic "This Magic Moment." Harry Nilsson's "Remember" not only opens the album but closes it in a brief reprise version, but Ross seems unsure what to do with it either time. The Beatles' "I Will" might be an excellent cover choice in more sympathetic hands, but Ross sounds uncomfortable with its simplicity and quietness, while her reading of Burt Bacharach-Hal David's sultry masterpiece "The Look of Love" is embarrassingly lifeless, especially if compared with Dusty Springfield's definitive '60s version. Whoever came up with the idea of Ross covering the Spiral Starecase's 1969 hit "More Today Than Yesterday" at least gets a few points for digging a bit deeper into the covers well, but Ross puts no fire into the up-tempo/upbeat song. Interestingly, the one new track here (other than a piece from the current Broadway production of The Color Purple), the Fred White-penned ballad "I Love You (That's All That Really Matters)," makes the most of Ross' vocal capabilities and range, begging the question of why she didn't just record an album of new material custom-fitted to her talents. Had the singer on this album been an unknown trying out for American Idol with these performances, no doubt Simon Cowell would have found her appalling. This has to be chalked up as an anomaly and a mistake, because an artist as singular as Diana Ross doesn't just forget who she is and what she does best. by Jeff Tamarkin
