RUTH PRICE - Sings With The Johnny Smith Quartet (1956-1989) FLAC (tracks), lossless

This album is a set of standards delivered by Ruth Price (who didn't make enough albums during her performing career), backed by Johnny Smith, one of jazz's eminent guitarists. Smith gained significant attention with his album Moonlight in Vermont, which Down Beat named as jazz album of the year, while Price performed in relative obscurity throughout her short career. Because this CD, originally issued by Teddy Reig's Roost Records, offers just a mite more than a half-hour's worth of music, each note should be savored. Price and Smith work wonderfully well together on tasteful arrangements played in an urbane, intelligent, and subdued manner. There are no pyrotechnics on this session. Their collaboration on "This Heart of Mine" rivals Sarah Vaughan's classic rendition. Gordon Jenkins' "Goodbye," with Smith's dramatic guitar and John Rae's softly stroked vibes playing in support of Price, is a highlight of the album. On "When You Wish Upon a Star," made popular by Ukelele Ike Edwards in Pinocchio, Smith abandons his chordal playing for a single string approach behind Price. While comprised mostly of slow ballads, the serious atmosphere is relieved from time to time with an upbeat number, such as "Time after Time" and a bouncy "Back in Your Own Back Yard," done with swinging merriment. Not blessed with an overwhelming voice or great range, Price concentrates on her interpretive skills as she works her cool vocals with very good results. Price didn't record a lot during her career, but what is available is well worth having. by Dave Nathan

RUTH PRICE, THE NORMAN PARIS TRIO & QUINTET - The Party's Over (1957) lp / MONO / FLAC (tracks), lossless

The aptly titled The Party's Over documents that moment in time when the conversation ends, the liquor runs dry, and the guests have all gone home. A contemplative, beautifully melancholy record, it captures a side of Ruth Price largely absent from her other LPs, paring her music to the essence of its being. Price favors a slightly breathy vocal approach that eloquently underscores the deeply personal intensity of songs like "By Myself," "If I Love Again," and "I Guess I'll Have to Dream the Rest." Norman Paris' small-combo arrangements are no less thoughtful: while the jazzy, piano-trio settings strip away unnecessary augmentation, the music is far from black-and-white -- splashes of instrumental color buoy Price's vocals at all the right moments. by Jason Ankeny

RUTH PRICE - Lucky To Be Me (1983) lp / FLAC (tracks), lossless

Despite remaining quite active as a singer, Ruth Price had not recorded as a leader in over 20 years when she cut this long-overdue (and now out-of-print) LP. Joined by pianist Tom Garvin, bassist Andy Simpkins, drummer Roy McCurdy and occasionally tenor saxophonist Pete Christlieb, Price emphasizes love songs on the mostly ballad-oriented and lyrical session. Among the 11 lyrics that she uplifts are "Lucky to Be Me," "My Romance," "Little Jazz Bird" and "Irresistible You." by Scott Yanow

RUTH PRICE - Ruth Price with Shelly Manne & His Menn at the Manne-Hole (1961-1991) RM / FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Singer Ruth Price on this early set falls somewhere between swinging jazz, middle-of-the-road pop, and cabaret. She does not improvise much, but her strong and very appealing voice uplifts the diverse material that she interprets (including "Dearly Beloved," "Shadrack," "Crazy He Calls Me," and "Look for the Silver Lining"), and she brings great sincerity to Leonard Bernstein's "Who Am I." Backed by Shelly Manne's quintet (with plenty heard from pianist Russ Freeman, but just guest spots by Richie Kamuca on tenor and one lone appearance by trumpeter Conte Candoli), Price is in fine form for her debut recording as a leader, which has been reissued on CD in the OJC series. by Scott Yanow

RUTH PRICE - My Name Is Ruth Price I Sing! (1955-2010) FLAC (tracks), lossless

A talented singer whose wide expressive qualities do justice to any lyrics that she chooses to interpret, Ruth Price has made relatively few recordings throughout her career. Originally a dancer, she attended ballet school in 1952. However, by 1954 she was singing with Charlie Ventura and, after freelancing in Philadelphia, she worked as a singer and dancer in New York. Price moved to Hollywood in 1957, recorded a fine album with Shelly Manne (which has been reissued in the Original Jazz Classics series), but did not cut her second album as a leader until 1983 (for ITI). She toured with Harry James (1964-1965), but in the '90s became best known for running one of Los Angeles' top jazz clubs, the Jazz Bakery. by Scott Yanow
