PEGGY LEE - Miss Peggy Lee (1998) 4CD / FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Except for four hit-making years for Decca in the middle of the '50s, Peggy Lee spent the balance of her career with Capitol. And though her many LPs were among the best recorded at the label, most still lay unreleased by the late '90s. Capitol rectified the situation somewhat with the release of its four-disc treatment, Miss Peggy Lee. Including well over 100 songs spanning the early '40s through the early '70s, and a heavy booklet (with an extended interview/reminiscence written by Gene Lees plus extensive track notations by Jim Pierson), the box set frames Lee as one of the most distinctive vocalists of the era, able to transform herself from coquettish to impassioned to utterly destitute with no lack of conviction. Though her voice was less strident and not as wide-ranging as other female vocalists of the time, Lee frequently proved herself equal to Billie Holiday for her ability to use her vocal limitations to even better effect on her songs. Miss Peggy Lee may be a tad confusing for neophytes -- it skips around through her career with little chronological order -- but the selections and flow are impeccable. by John Bush

PEGGY LEE - Peggy Lee with the Dave Barbour Band (1991) FLAC (tracks), lossless

In the late '40s, Peggy Lee launched a successful solo singing career on records and radio without doing much in the way of live performing. As a part of that, she made a lot of transcriptions for radio play, backed by a small jazz band led by her guitarist-husband Dave Barbour. This budget compilation contains 14 of the "MacGregor" transcriptions, on which Lee addresses standards like "I Should Care," "September In The Rain," and "Nice Work If You Can Get It," with generous soloing space given to the band. by William Ruhlmann

PEGGY LEE - Moments Like This (1993) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

At this late point in Peggy Lee's career, she was heard best in small doses, singing an emotional ballad for three minutes (such as on "The Folks Who Live on the Hill"). This full-length CD, Moments Like This, finds Lee revisiting her former heights (such as her remakes of "Why Don't You Do Right" and "Mañana (Is Soon Enough for Me)"), but without the voice to pull it off. Pianist Mike Renzi provided the sympathetic arrangements for the rhythm section, and saxophonist Gerry Niewood helps out, but the main focus is on the aging singer (then 72), and despite her sincerity, the voice was no longer there. by Scott Yanow
