While Peggy Lee and the songs of Leiber & Stoller seem like an ideal match, and they did result in the still-spooky hit "Is That All There Is," unfortunately the singer was way past her prime by the time she performed most of this material. The reissue starts out strong with a rousing "Kansas City," but that is one of only two songs that date from 1962. With the exception of the 1969 hit, the rest of the program (which does not list the personnel of the orchestras) is from the mid-'70s when Lee's voice had shrunk to an alarming level where it was barely above a whisper. While she does her best, she was simply not strong enough for most of this material. by Scott Yanow
