A criticism unfairly levied against jazz singers is that after you've heard them perform one or two songs, you've heard everything they have to offer. Peggy Cone's initial album should go a long way in putting that criticism to rest. She treats each tune on this album as a story written just for her. She tells the story in such an engaging manner that it immediately gets and keeps the listener's attention. Listen to the Jack Segal/Marvin Fisher classic "When Sunny Gets Blue," "Falling in Love Again" and Benny Carter and Sammy Cahn's lovely, under-recorded "Only Trust Your Heart." Cone performs with emotion and vitality, and offers a fresh approach to each of these standards. There's some of Chris Connor, Anita O'Day and Frances Faye in her style. Cone delivers "Love for Sale with a Latin beat like Faye's on her Swinging All the Way album (which she recorded with Marty Paich). "Blue Skies" swings mightily and "Lucky So and So" has a blues tinge. Cone's significant composing skills are shown on her "Dance of Love." Throughout the session, Cone is sympathetically backed by her regular group -- Vincent Jacqz, piano; Andrew Hall, bass; and Stefan Schatz's understated brush work on drums. There's a guest appearance by Mingus Big Band drummer Victor Jones on two tracks. Jacqz and Schatz solo nicely on "This Can't Be Love." Dave Nathan
