DIONNE WARWICK - Valley of the Dolls (1968-2013) RM | Serie : Burt Bacharach 85th Birth Anniversary & Dionne Warwick Debut 50th Anniversary | FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Dionne Warwick followed The Magic of Believing (1968), a collection of spirituals and religious material, with her first Top Ten LP Valley of the Dolls (1968). Interestingly, the familiar rendering of the title track wasn't the one that was in the motion picture. This is all but academic, as the version featured here reached all the way to number two on the Top Singles chart in February of 1968. The André Previn penned movie theme was certainly not the only reason for the album's success as Burt Bacharach and Hal David provide several impressive compositions, most notably the Top Ten "Do You Know the Way to San José." Among their further contributions are the quaint opener "As Long as There's an Apple Tree," plus the soulful ballads "Where Would I Go," and "Let Me Be Lonely." The former has a slightly dark Baroque-flavored melody, while the latter became a lower-tier hit (number 71) and would serve as a staple in Warwick's timeless interpretations of Bacharach/David classics. A few of the other recognizable selections are her take on Jimmy Webb's "Up, Up and Away" that is highlighted by some inspired, albeit uncredited organ licks. In the same recording session that yielded the "(Theme From) Valley of the Dolls," Warwick cut a powerful reading of "You're My World," which had been a sizable side for Cilla Black. The rousing "For the Rest of My Life" is additionally distinguished as the Italian-sung "Dedicato All Amore," her entry in the 1967 San Remo Song Festival. Lindsay Planer

DIONNE WARWICK - Soulful (1969-2013) RM | Serie : Burt Bacharach 85th Birth Anniversary & Dionne Warwick Debut 50th Anniversary | FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Soulful is a major work in Dionne Warwick's deep catalog, and one worthy of study and appreciation. Starting off with a Top 20 hit from October of 1969, her gutsy rendition of "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling," the album shifts from songs containing the sweet and ever present voice found on '60s radio to one of a masterful artist in control, renditions of "Do Right Woman" and the tender approach to "I've Been Loving You Too Long" allowing these copyrights to be heard in a different and intriguing light. Recorded at American Sound Studios in Memphis, TN, with the great Chips Moman engineering and co-producing with Warwick, the only place you'll find the names Burt Bacharach and Hal David is on the label: "A Burt Bacharach-Hal David Production Produced by Chips Moman and Dionne Warwick." In her liner notes on the back cover the singer writes, "I hope you will enjoy experiencing with me the joy and excitement I felt in recording Rhythm and Blues -- my way." To quote blues singer Genya Ravan, "and she means it!" Working with the producer of the Box Tops' "The Letter" and Elvis Presley was a wonderful change and stretch for the woman who was so closely aligned with the music and production of Bacharach and David. Recording in the state that has bragging rights to Graceland was in vogue during the final year of the 1960s and into the early '70s, Steve Cropper's production of Mitch Ryder's The Detroit-Memphis Experiment just another part of the story leading up to the legendary Dusty in Memphis album, perhaps this genre's centerpiece. It's easy to see how a pop princess like Dionne Warwick with such a string of hits could get overlooked -- perhaps by virtue of the sheer volume of her output. The same could be said for Tommy James, whose brilliant My Head, My Bed & My Red Guitar went unnoticed by pop fans too intent on hearing his greatest hits time and again rather than investigating the artist that made those hits. Like Tommy James' Elvis-influenced album, Soulful deserves a very special place in rock history. "We Can Work It Out" is what Otis Redding might have done with the material, while "Hey Jude" has a church-like feel, not immersed in gospel but enough of that flavor to lift it above its pop confines. The short fade with the voices bouncing off the horns was a very nice way to close out the album. There are three Beatles covers as well as some Young Rascals, Aretha, Marvin Gaye/Tammi Terrell, and James & Bobby Purify. Moman also crafted Petula Clark's Memphis this same year, and both Petula and Dionne take on Curtis Mayfield's "People Get Ready," indicating perhaps what these Top 40 singers were feeling in their heart -- the need to express themselves on compositions that they found compelling. "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" is the standout, not because it was the hit from this collection but because Dionne takes on a new fire, pouring her heart over the great drum work. This version of the song gets little to no airplay on oldies stations, let alone blues and R&B radio, which is tragic. Warwick is a pro as well as a major talent, and Soulful deserves to be treasured as the important musical statement that it is. Joe Viglione

DIONNE WARWICK - I'll Never Fall in Love Again (1970-2013) RM | Serie : Burt Bacharach 85th Birth Anniversary & Dionne Warwick Debut 50th Anniversary | FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Vocalist Dionne Warwick returned to the Burt Bacharach and Hal David stable on 1970's I'll Never Fall in Love Again after the previous year's hugely successful Soulful, an endeavor consisting of R&B covers cut in Memphis, Tennessee, under the direction of Chips Moman. Once back into the fold, Warwick picked right up where 1968's Promises, Promises left off, most notably with "I'll Never Fall in Love Again," a holdover from the Bacharach/David-penned Broadway production Promises, Promises. The upbeat and optimistic "Knowing When to Leave" had likewise been gleaned from the show, which premiered December 1, 1968 at the Shubert Theatre, ultimately running for 1,281 performances. While Warwick would not be a part of the stage cast, she contributed significantly to the popularity of the tunes as she took the title track from this LP and Promises, Promises into the Top 20. "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head" is given an arrangement strikingly similar to the hit version and was a wise inclusion, as B.J. Thomas' reading would tread familiar ground with listeners. As was her trademark on the vast majority of the Bacharach/David collaborations, Warwick gives the song an appreciably expressive interpretation that seems to effortlessly fit the composition. The same can be said of the infectious jazzy groove on "Paper Mache" and the timelessly quirky and samba-influenced "Loneliness Remembers, What Happiness Forgets," as well as the lightly scored "Odds and Ends." Although exceedingly soulful, the horn section incorporated into George Harrison's "Something" negates much of the melody's inherent intimacy. Conversely, Jimmy Webb's "Didn't We" is stunning with an old-school approach that underscores the gorgeous pop standard balladry. The platter concludes with Paul Anka's "My Way," incrementally building from an airy yet affective take into a full-blown orchestrated epic. Lindsay Planer

DIONNE WARWICK - Very Dionne (1970-2013) RM | Serie : Burt Bacharach 85th Birth Anniversary & Dionne Warwick Debut 50th Anniversary | FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Dionne Warwick concluded an eight-year run on Scepter Records with 1970's Very Dionne. The album's wide variety of styles summed up much of what made Warwick's back catalog so universally appealing. In addition to a handful of new Burt Bacharach and Hal David sides, the platter boasts tasteful reworkings of pop music staples. As Bacharach and David were ensconced in their own careers -- together and separately -- Warwick, along with her other arrangers, concocted an interesting mix of classic and familiar contemporary tunes, including a live take of "Make It Easy On Yourself," a cut she initially recorded for her first Scepter long-player, 1963's Presenting Dionne Warwick. Although the singer would subsequently state that "Check Out Time" was one of her least favorite Bacharach/David compositions, she opens Very Dionne with an emotive and slightly angst-filled intonation. The mood is immediately contrasted by the pensive and reflective nature of Marty Paich's score on "Yesterday," which Warwick duly matches by way of her generous and soulful interpretation. Larry Wilcox's treatment of the Jimmy Van Heusen standard "Here Comes That Rainy Day" is a perfect example of the vocalist's significant middle-of-the-road allure. This carries over to the decidedly more modern "Going Out of My Head" and "We've Only Just Begun." One unmitigated zenith is "I Got Love" from the Ossie Davis Broadway production Purlie. Once again, Warwick -- under Paich's direction -- equals if not surpasses Melba Moore's stage presentation. In 2004, an expanded edition of Very Dionne increased the running order by 16 selections, highlighted by a ten-song mini-concert held July 23, 1970, at the Garden State Arts Center in Holmdel, NJ, the same show that had yielded "Make It Easy On Yourself" on the original LP. DIONNE WARWICK - Dionne (1972-2013) RM | Serie: Burt Bacharach 85th Birth Anniversary & Dionne Warwick Debut 50th Anniversary | FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Dionne Warwick's first album for Warner Bros. in 1971 didn't seem to change much. She was still working with Burt Bacharach and Hal David and still cranking out sophisticated ballads with the trademark orchestrated Bacharach sound. The only thing missing on Dionne is some kind of chart action. "If We Only Have Love" reached only number 84 on the single charts, the album itself didn't rise above the mid-'50s. Maybe it was the less-than-enchanting cover art, maybe the buying public were tired of Warwick and her sound. They missed out on half of a really good record with some beautiful songs like "If You Never Say Goodbye," a hip, elevator pop swinger with a swooning chorus, "My First Night Without You," a very soulful ballad with very expressive strings and a brutally honest vocal from Warwick, and "The Balance of Nature," a romantic and dramatic ballad that would be perfect in an Audrey Hepburn movie. The record is only half good because half of the record is not arranged and produced by Bacharach. Instead, the chores are (mis)handled by Bob James and Don Sebesky, both of whom imitate the lush and sweeping sound of Bacharach but with none of his subtlety, wit or grace. The covers of "Close to You" and "One Less Bell to Answer" are drippy and obvious, the Mort Shuman/Jacques Brel song "If We Only Have Love" is overblown and plastic-sounding, and the only song that comes off well is "Love Song," as Sebesky scales back the schmaltz and casts Warwick as a folk-pop singer complete with acoustic guitars, wood flute, and lush vocal harmonies. It is good enough to really make you ponder what it would have been like had Warwick pursued this direction. She didn't, but she also didn't work with Bacharach and David again as a team until many years later as that duo broke up right after the recording of Dionne and Warwick ended up suing them for millions of dollars and a share of the future rights of the songs they recorded together. Still, the half of this record that features them is a fittingly wonderful final testament to the glory days of the trio, and if you are a fan of their classic sound you will want to seek out this album. DIONNE WARWICK - Just Being Myself (1973-2013) Serie : Burt Bacharach 85th Birth Anniversary & Dionne Warwick Debut 50th Anniversary | FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

After 1971's Dionne, Dionne Warwick had to look for new producers and songwriters because her main team of Burt Bacharach and Hal David split up right after working on the record. She turned to former Motown hitmakers Eddie Holland, Brian Holland and Lamont Dozier and released Just Being Myself in 1973. The album's title is somewhat ironic because Holland, Dozier and Holland removed Warwick from the creative process, basically asking her to record her vocals over previously recorded backing tracks. Not that most of what they came up with was too far from what she had been recording before since the bulk of the record is made up of lush, orchestrated ballads like "I Always Get Caught Out in the Rain," "You Are the Heart of Me," and "Don't Let My Teardrops Bother You." Her new producers are just as fond of piping trumpets and cascading strings, they just are more straightforward and come from a more soulful direction. The gospel-ly backing vocals and occasional wah-wah guitars that pop up here regularly would never show up on a Bacharach record, and some of the tracks like the title track and "Come Back" have a feel that conjures up an improbable meeting between Bacharach and Curtis Mayfield. Indeed the best track here, "You're Gonna Need Me," is a perfect blend of the drama of Warwick's delivery and the razor-wire drama of a Mayfield production that should have been a monster hit. Instead it came out as the B-Side to " (I'm) Just Being Myself" and only came to light when it was sampled by Usher on "Throwback." Just Being Myself never caught on with either the pop or the urban buyers, maybe it straddled the line too much, but in retrospect it is a very interesting and successful record that shows Warwick could be a convincing soul singer and despite her qualms, could succeed, artistically anyway, away from the warm embrace of a Bacharach/David production. DIONNE WARWICK - Then Came You (1975-2008) RM | FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

After being a premier vocalist in the '60s, Warwick seemed to have hit a stylistic wall by the early '70s. By the time she signed with Warner Bros. in 1970, Warwick attempted many styles and producers. Then Came You, released in 1975, has her teaming with both Jerry Ragovoy and, for one track, Thom Bell. Jerry Ragovoy was a successful producer who had Garnet Mimms and Howard Tate among his credits. For this effort, Ragovoy assembled a strong New York session band, including John Tropea, Leon Pendarvis, and Bob Babbitt. The first track, "Take It From Me," has Warwick getting a more R&B styled production rather than MOR. That was perfect since her voice had matured, attaining an effortless warmth and ease. Here she wasn't so much an interpreter of "great material," her voice and charm were the primary draw. Ragovoy's track "Move Me No Mountain" has a Barry White-styled backing, and Warwick got a chance to be more sensual. "How Can I Tell Him," a skilled, song about exiting a relationship, written by Ragovoy and Jacob Brackman, incorporates a slick arrangement that perfectly matches the feeling of person exiting a relationship. Warwick perfectly sung the lyrics with a sense of cautiousness, but also a little bit of happiness to be leaving. The title track is the duet with the Spinners. The song, produced by Thom Bell, was a number one pop single and her biggest hit in close to four years. Then Came You is mostly an innovative effort of New York R&B/pop that should make anyone's short list of albums that truly capture the style. Jason Elias

DIONNE WARWICK - Track of the Cat (1975-2002) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

After leaving Scepter, Dionne Warwick floundered for a while as she sought the production and arranging assistance she needed to return to her past heights. She didn't get it on this 1975 release, as songs like "Love Me One More Time" and "Jealousy" were tentatively sung, burdened with unimpressive lyrics, or poorly produced. Warwick was also experiencing personal problems and experimenting with adding an "e" to her last name, neither of which helped the situation. Ron Wynn

DIONNE WARWICK - Love at First Sight (1977-2000) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Produced by the hit production team of Steve Barri and Michael Omartian (Rhythm Heritage's number one pop hit "Theme from S.W.A.T,"), Dionne Warwick's 1977 Warner Bros. LP Love at First Sight came closest in pop ethics to her earlier sides on Scepter. Serving as a reminder of those days is the wispy ballad "Do I Have to Cry" and the perky "Early Morning Strangers," which were co-written by Hal David, who co-wrote Warwick's '60s and early-'70s hit classics with Burt Bacharach. The upbeat first single, "Do You Believe in Love at First Sight," was one of the catchier tracks off the singer's '70s records. However, the cornerstone of the LP was the atmospheric "Don't Ever Take Your Love Away," co-written by Issac Hayes. The Barry Mann/Cynthia Weil charmer "Long Way to Go" is closest in theme to Warwick's favorite song, "Windows of the World." Ed Hogan

Dionne Warwick's career was revived when she teamed with Barry Manilow on this 1979 LP. Manilow's production of such heavily orchestrated numbers as "I Know I'll Never Love This Way Again" put Warwick back in the spotlight, as she once again sounded confident and compelling. It was the first platinum album of her career, and also her first album in ten years to crack the Top 20 on the pop album chart. Warwick scored another hit with "Deja Vu," and was back on track. DIONNE WARWICK - Heartbreaker (1982-1986) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

The Barry Gibb hit machine of the early '80s kept steam rolling at a frantic pace, and Heartbreaker was a major factor in the equation. While it lacks the genius and soulful grit of Dionne Warwick's earlier classic work, the album was polished and painstakingly produced perfectly for adult pop stations. Heartbreaker was tailor made to be played right next to the soft rock hits of the era and it helped to propel the singer into the spotlight once again. Starting off with a bang courtesy of the title track, Warwick and Gibb go through all of the motions. The track sequencing gives the album a feeling of deflation at first, as tempos gradually decrease until "Take The Short Way Home," which is so Gibb-esque that it could be an outtake from Spirits Having Flown. There are a few fragments of filler, most notably with "All I Love in the World," which is almost a redux of the title track. This is not the most definitive album of Warwick's career, but is definitely one of the few highlights that a pop-heavy '80s afforded her. Rob Theakston

DIONNE WARWICK - How Many Times Can We Say (1983-1986) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

In the early '80 Warwick experienced a career renaissance thanks to "Déjà Vu" and her singing to Arista, a label seemed to be more sympathetic to her needs. This 1983 album pairs her with producer Luther Vandross. Vandross, who also produced Aretha Franklin's Jump To It in 1982, is a much better teaming of singer and producer. Although "Got a Date" and "I Do It 'Cause I Like It" are both disposable pop-based filler, this album has phenomenal versions of some of Vandross' unsung gems. The poignant title track is a duet with Vandross and Warwick, and finds their voices blending extremely well. The gentle "So Amazing" and the gossamer and touching "What Can a Miracle Do" have Warwick's all-encompassing and raspy vocals cohering in Vandross' trademark lush surroundings. She also tackles Michael McDonald's grade A weeper "I Can Let Go Now" and brings a deeper sense of longing and hurt than the great original. In the same vein, "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" shows up as a reflective ballad featuring the Shirelles. This album features arguably Vandross' best players, including Nat Adderley, Jr. on keyboards, drummer Yogi Horton, bassist Marcus Miller, and great emotive synth work by Skip Anderson. While a few tracks fall short of the mark, the best here makes How Many Times Can We Say Goodbye an absolute necessity for fans of Warwick and Vandross. Jason Elias

DIONNE WARWICK - Friends (1985) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

The huge chart topper "That's What Friends Are For" ensured that this would be a big hit album for Dionne Warwick. The song has become a signature piece, even though it's not as compelling as "Walk On By," and Warwick's vocal isn't as gripping as that of either Gladys Knight or Stevie Wonder (or even Elton John). But it was the perfect tune for the times and made everything else on the album insignificant (which it was anyhow). Ron Wynn

DIONNE WARWICK - Reservations for Two (1987) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Dionne Warwick's aptly-titled LP Reservations for Two is a collection of smooth pop duets, some of which reunite the singer with Burt Bacharach. The first single, "Love Power," sung with Jeffrey Osborne, is as mild as a warm cup of coffee and made the Top Five on the R&B and Top 20 on the pop charts. The track is on Osborne's Ultimate Collection and Warwick's own Definitive Collection. The title track duet with Kashif was a Top 20 R&B hit in late 1987 can also be found on Kashif's own Definitive Collection. Ed Hogan

DIONNE WARWICK - Sings Cole Porter (1990) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

A grand idea, but Warwick didn't meet the challenge as magically as she might have in the 1960s or '70s. Instead, she sounded almost prim and stiff instead of engaging and confident. It was a surprise, given how wonderful Warwick sounded doing similar (though certainly not as well constructed) material from Barry Manilow. It was still worth hearing, but far from the anticipated triumph. Ron Wynn

DIONNE WARWICK - Friends Can Be Lovers (1993) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Here lies the pleasant balance between Dionnesque pop anthems ("Age of Miracles" and "I Sing at Dawn"), ballads (Sting's "Fragile" and a duet with Whitney Houston on "Love Will Find a Way"), down-right funk on "Much Too Much" and shameless lust on "Where My Lips Have Been." Also included is Warwick's glorious reunion with Bacharach/David on "Sunny Weather Lover." Certainly one of her best-produced, best-sung and well-packaged albums since joining the Arista roster.
