PEGGY LEE - At Last : The Lost Radio Recordings (2015) 2CD / FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

The 2015 two-disc Peggy Lee anthology At Last: The Lost Radio Recordings compiles live performances the iconic vocalist gave for her radio show in 1951. Originally broadcast over the CBS network and the Armed Forces Radio Service, these performances showcase Lee backed by bands led by Sonny Burke in Los Angeles and Russ Case in New York. Rather than focusing on her best-known material, Real Gone instead has handpicked songs Lee never officially recorded in a studio, including many songs made famous by her contemporaries like Doris Day, Rosemary Clooney, Dinah Shore, and Jo Stafford. Included are such songs as "I'll See You in My Dreams," "The Wheel of Fortune," "Everything Happens to Me," "Ole Buttermilk Sky," "I'll Never Smile Again," and many more. by Matt Collar

PEGGY LEE - Miss Wonderful (2006) 4 CD SET / FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Duke Ellington called her the queen and rightly so. Peggy Lee made beautiful music during her long career. She was a dedicated perfectionist is everything she did, singing, acting or songwriting. This quality becomes apparent in this collection of highlights from the first 10 years of La Lee's solo career.

PEGGY LEE & JUNE CHRISTY - The Complete Peggy Lee & June Christy Capitol Transcription Sessions (1998) 5CD / FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Mosaic, the Rolls-Royce of record companies, has produced another of its limited-edition gems (5,000 copies and no more). This five-CD boxed set highlights the early work of two of the more famous vocal graduates of the swing era -- Peggy Lee and June Christy. Recently signed by Capitol, they were the company's attempt to break into the transcription business. Transcriptions were records provided to radio stations to fill a constant need for music that regular commercial releases were unable to meet. Most of the songs on this album, cuts from 1945 through 1949, were never before or since recorded by Lee and Christy, so they are a nice addition to their respective discographies. Of the two, Peggy Lee's style is clearly the most advanced. She had a successful tenure with Benny Goodman in the early '40s. After completing a hiatus as a homemaker for her husband, Dave Barbour, who accompanies her on several of these cuts, she started recording with Capitol in 1946. Her languid, laid-back approach that was to characterize her singing for the next 50-plus years was pretty well-developed by this time. In contrast, June Christy, who had just joined the Stan Kenton band, was still searching for her singing personality. The early cuts reveal she was still very much bound to Billie Holiday's style. But, by the time of the 1946 sessions on this album, the voice that was to become one of the most recognized by popular song fans, with Kenton and, later, with Pete Rugolo, Lou Levy, and others began to unfold. One surprise on the Christy sides is the valve-trombone work by Gene Roland. Noted more for his arranging skills than his soloing, his trombone work glistens on such cuts as "How High the Moon." Like all Mosaic releases, this album comes with complete annotations and an informative booklet. by Dave Nathan

PEGGY LEE - MIRRORS (1975-2001) RM / FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Intelligent, evocative, understated, and mature are words that come to mind when describing this 1975 recording. The album is the reflection of a middle-aged woman pondering her present life while romanticizing the past, knowing full well that, in the words of the last song, "We're longing for a simpler time that never was." Written and produced by Leiber & Stoller, and sung in the soft, breathy style of Peggy Lee, the listener is taken through a journey of songs that often evoke a sense of melancholy, even when the lyrical content seems upbeat, such as on "I've Got Them Feelin' Too Good Today Blues." Thoughtful and understated arrangements by Johnny Mandel do a superb job of supporting but never overpowering the lyrics or the vocal style of Lee. Several songs musically evoke what is implied in the title. "Professor Hauptmann's Performing Dogs," for instance, brings to mind sounds reminiscent of the circus. In less skilled hands, musically representing what is lyrically conveyed might not work, but in the talented hands of Leiber, Stoller, and Mandel, it works wonderfully. This is an album where it is apparent the singer, songwriters, and arranger all worked together to make an album worthy of the talents of everyone involved -- they certainly succeeded in that goal. by Michael Ofjord

PEGGY LEE - Black Coffee With Peggy Lee (1956-1999) RM / FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Peggy Lee left Capitol in 1952 for, among several other reasons, the label's refusal to let her record and release an exotic, tumultuous version of "Lover." Lee was certainly no Mitch Miller songbird, content to loosen her gorgeous pipes on any piece of tripe foisted upon her; she was a superb songwriter with a knowledge of production and arrangement gained from work in big bands and from her husband, Dave Barbour (although the two weren't together at the time). The more open-minded Decca acquiesced to her demand, and watched its investment pay off quickly when the single became her biggest hit in years. Black Coffee was Lee's next major project. Encouraged by longtime Decca A&R Milt Gabler, she hired a small group including trumpeter Pete Candoli and pianist Jimmy Rowles (two of her favorite sidemen) to record an after-hours jazz project similar in intent and execution to Lee Wiley's "Manhattan project" of 1950, Night in Manhattan. While the title-track opener of Black Coffee soon separated itself from the LP -- to be taught forever after during the first period of any Torch Song 101 class -- the album doesn't keep to its concept very long; Lee is soon enough in a bouncy mood for "I've Got You Under My Skin" and very affectionate on "Easy Living." (If there's a concept at work here, it's the vagaries of love.) Listeners should look instead to "It Ain't Necessarily So" or "Gee, Baby, Ain't I Good to You?" for more examples of Lee's quintessentially slow-burn sultriness. Aside from occasionally straying off-concept, however, Black Coffee is an excellent record, spotlighting Lee's ability to shine with every type of group and in any context. [When originally recorded and released in 1953, Black Coffee was an eight-song catalog of 78s. Three years later, Decca commissioned an LP expansion of the record, for which Lee recorded several more songs. The 2004 Verve edition is therefore a reissue of the 1956 12-song LP.] by John Bush

PEGGY LEE / GEORGE SHEARING - Beauty and the Beat! (1959-2003) RM / FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Upon its first release Beauty and the Beat! was billed as a live recording from a Miami convention of disc jockeys. Though Peggy Lee and George Shearing did in fact perform there (and attempts were made to record them for later release), the songs heard on the subsequent LP were recorded in the studio and overdubbed with rather obvious canned applause, announcements, and even post-production echo. Lee and Shearing, who had never recorded before, conceived a set of completely new arrangements that played to their strengths: stately blues and effervescent swing. The best of the former comes on a pair of locale-referencing quasi-blues, "I Lost My Sugar in Salt Lake City" and "You Came a Long Way From St. Louis," both of which Lee and Shearing are able to transform into languorous, respectable torch songs. The usually downcast "Blue Prelude" is actually taken at a laissez faire tempo that Lee treats well, and the original set ends with "Get Out of Town" and "Satin Doll," a pair of bemused, affectionate performances that perfectly suit the pair. Lee and Shearing's only collaboration on record -- though both would occasionally perform together thereafter -- is a supremely chilled session of late-night blues from two masters of the form. by John Bush

PEGGY LEE - Dream Street (1957-1999) RM / FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Dream Street captures Peggy Lee at her most intimate and melancholy -- a song cycle exploring love and loss in uncompromisingly frank terms, it strips away the saccharine and schmaltz so common among the singer's Decca sessions to effectively create the first truly adult music of her career. Lee occupies the same harrowing emotional territory staked out by Frank Sinatra via the landmark In the Wee Small Hours, investing the material with the kind of heartbreak and longing that belies the whole "easy listening" tag -- this is music shorn of pretense and artifice, as intense as a primal scream yet beautiful in the way only art of this magnitude can be.  by Jason Ankeny

Peggy Lee ‎– Sea Shells (1958-1999) RM / FLAC (tracks), lossless

Peggy Lee returned to Capitol Records in 1957 after a five-year stretch at Decca Records, but it wasn't until 1958 that Decca got around to releasing Sea Shells, an LP she had recorded during her tenure with the label. That the recording sat on the shelf for a while is not surprising given the contents, which make it Lee's most unusual album. Accompanied only by harp player Stella Castellucci and harpsichordist Gene DiNovi, she essays a group of art songs and Chinese poetry (thankfully translated into English) on this thoughtful, esoteric project. On several tracks ("Greensleeves," the Lee-composed "The Happy Monks," Debussy's "The Maid with the Flaxen Hair," "Chaconde"), the instrumentalists are on their own with no participation from the singer. Lee ventures into children's fare ("I Don't Want to Play in Your Yard") and Irish music ("The Wearing of the Green"), but throughout, she maintains a calm demeanor and sings or speaks with precise articulation, reflecting on philosophical and metaphysical concerns. All of that is fine, of course, as long as the potential buyer is aware of the approach. Decca may have finally issued the disc in hopes of getting some sales simply on Lee's name, but nobody should pick this one up expecting to hear anything in the vein of "Mañana (Is Soon Enough for Me)" or "Lover."  by William Ruhlmann
