SARAH VAUGHAN - After Hours At The London House (1958-2005) RM | FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Seven months after Mercury recorded Sarah Vaughan in a live setting for the surprisingly successful At Mr. Kelly's, the label planned another date with the microphones for the night of March 7, 1958. This time, however, instead of setting up at Mr. Kelly's (although she was booked for three shows that night), the producers invited a small group of friends and well-wishers to another Chicago club, London House, for an after-hours session. Vaughan expanded her trio with a quartet of Count Basie titans, including trumpeter Thad Jones and tenor Frank Wess, and as if the settings weren't challenging enough already, decided to record a set that, in true after-hours fashion, was completely improvised. (The cover photo even shows her studying a sheet as she sings.) Although the results are certainly far looser and more relaxed than a studio date, Vaughan and the instrumentalists don't shine as expected. Vaughan in particular plays it safe with this material, drawing out her cozy ballads with interpretive ease, but never taking them as far as she could in a more stable setting. The format breaks down completely on the final song, "Thanks for the Memory," when Vaughan misreads a lyric, puzzles over it for a few seconds, restarts the number, flubs it again, starts over one more time, and finally wraps up after seven minutes by declaring the session -- while still singing, of course -- "the most craziest, upsettin', down-sided recording date I ever had in my life." SARAH VAUGHAN - The Diva Series (2003) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Part of Verve's Diva Series, this Sarah Vaughan collection is by no means a definitive look at her career. It is, however, a nice overview featuring a healthy slice of some of her best tracks. Included here are such popular recordings as "How High the Moon," "I Want to Be Happy," and "Misty." While most die-hard collectors will already own these tracks, listeners looking for a truthful introduction to Vaughan's mellow vocal style could do worse than this. Matt Collar

SARAH VAUGHAN - Sarah for Lovers (2003) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Sarah for Lovers is a 16-track compilation of tracks recorded from 1954 to 1967 for Verve and EmArcy that focuses on the romantic side of Sarah Vaughan. Most of the songs feature orchestral backing, though a handful have small-group backing, most notably the two tracks from 1954's Swingin' Easy: "Words Can't Describe" and her dreamy take on "Polka Dots and Moonbeams" with some hilarious drums by Roy Haynes. The orchestral tracks can be a little sappy, especially when Vaughan is backed by Hal Mooney's Orchestra, as she is on "I've Got a Crush on You," "Happiness Is Just a Thing Called Joe," and "My Romance," or when she is backed by Hugo Peretti's Orchestra on "It's Magic" and "I'm in the Mood for Love." Songs she did with Quincy Jones' Orchestra are more successful; even though the three songs here feature strings, they still swing a little. The small-group tracks are where Vaughan really shines. Apart from the tracks from Swingin' Easy, there is a quartet track, "Embraceable You," from 1954's Sarah Vaughan; another track from that album, "I'm Glad There Is You," that features a larger group including Clifford Brown and is arranged by the always innovative Ernie Wilkins; a mellow take on "Corcovado" from 1964's Viva! Vaughan; and a sweet take on Henry Mancini's "Dreamsville" from 1964's underrated Sarah Vaughan Sings the Mancini Song Book that does feature strings but in a fairly unobtrusive manner. Sarah for Lovers is certainly full of romantic songs but the compilers of the disc may have trouble pleasing their intended audiences. Fans of jazz vocals may find the orchestral tracks to be too much in the easy listening realm. People who just want mellow background music may be put off by the dynamic vocals of Vaughan. Add to that the fact that fans of Sarah Vaughan will likely have better compilations than this in their collections already and this disc ends up being inessential at best. Tim Sendra

SARAH VAUGHAN - No Count Sarah (1959) lp | MONO | 24bits-96hz | FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Sarah Vaughan recorded in a variety of settings while with Mercury and EmArcy in the 1950s, but this particular matchup with the Count Basie Orchestra (pianist Ronnell Bright substitutes for Count, thus the title) is pure jazz. During the classic encounter, Vaughan fits in comfortably with the band, whether singing lyrics (such as "Darn That Dream," "Cheek to Cheek," or "Doodlin'") or scatting sensuously on "No Count Blues." The wit and constant swing (in addition to the spontaneous creativity), makes this one of the best of all Sarah Vaughan recordings. Highly recommended. Scott Yanow

Notas.
This Mercury Custom Hi Fidelity recording is the result of the most modern recording technique of our time. The masters for this album were transferred through an Ampex 301 tape machine, a Pultec Filter and Equalizer, Altec limiting amplifiers, Mac Intosh monitor amplifier and a 150 watt power amplifier designed especially to drive the BBC Grampian Feedback Cutting Head.

This monaural disc can be played equally well with either a STEREO cartridge or a STANDART 1 mil microgroove cartridge.

Because of the fine technical equipment used in the recording of these masters, one is assured of the most faithful reproduction in the transfer from original recording to the final masters user for processing.

HI-FInformation:

For this recording session the brass and the rhythm section and piano were on the right channel. Accent mikes utilized included: troumbones - RCA 44-BX; trumpets - RCA 44-BX; bass - RCA 44-BX; drums - RCA 44-BX; guitar - RCA 44-BX; On the left channel were the following, thru the accent mikes listed: Sarah Vaughan - Telefunken U-47; reeds - Telefunken U-47; and piano - Telefunken U-47. For monaural, the same accent mikes utilized with all feeding into a Ampex 300 monaural tape recorder. For Stereo, the two tracks were fed into an Ampex 350-2.

The stereo session is interesting in that this was the first time that Mercury ever used all one type mike on one channel, while all of another type of mike was used on the opposite channel.

SARAH VAUGHAN - Sarah + 2 (1965-2006) RM | FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Roulette, the same label that brought the world Jimmie F. Rodgers' "Kisses Sweeter Than Wine" and Joey Dee's "Peppermint Twist," also recorded some wonderful vocal sessions on Joe Williams, Dinah Washington, and Sarah Vaughan. While most of these were dates for ballads and lush strings, they also allowed their artists latitude for a variety of settings. When a Sarah Vaughan album titled After Hours sold better than others -- despite featuring only guitar and bass accompaniment -- they replicated the formula for 1962's wonderful Sarah + 2. Only the personnel changed; Barney Kessel took over from Mundell Lowe, while Joe Comfort stood in for George Duvivier on bass. The results are excellent, highlighting the power of Vaughan's voice, whether she's singing a rosy "All I Do Is Dream of You" or one of the most turgid torch songs, "All or Nothing at All." Her best feature is "When Sunny Gets Blue," a spotlight for her dynamic range. John Bush

SARAH VAUGHAN - After Hours (1961-1997) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

From 1961-1962, Sarah Vaughan recorded two albums while accompanied by just guitar and bass. Her 1962 outing for the obscure Reactivation label (with guitarist Barney Kessel and bassist Joe Comfort) is hard to find, as is her earlier set with guitarist Mundell Lowe and bassist George Duvivier. Surprisingly, Lowe only has one solo, so the emphasis throughout is exclusively on Vaughan's magnificent voice. The program mostly sticks to ballads, with a couple of exceptions (most notably "Great Day"), and is a quiet and intimate affair, with Vaughan more subtle than she sometimes was. Despite a lightweight version of "My Favorite Things" that will not remind listeners of John Coltrane, this is an excellent if brief set (34-and-a-half minutes) with some fine jazz singing. COUNT BASIE | SARAH VAUGHAN - Count Basie & Sarah Vaughan (1961-1996) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Although Count Basie gets top billing, he actually doesn't even appear on this set. Basie's Orchestra and pianist Kirk Stuart are purely in a supporting role behind the magnificent voice of Sarah Vaughan, other than a couple of short spots for trumpeter Joe Newman and Frank Foster's tenor. Sometimes Vaughan sounds overly mannered and seems to give little weight to the words she is singing, but her wide range and impeccable musicianship carry the day. Highlights include "Perdido," "Mean to Me," and "You Go to My Head," and the set is understandably recommended more for Sarah Vaughan fans than Count Basie collectors. [Some reissues add a pair of charming Vaughan duets with Joe Williams, "Teach Me Tonight" and "If I Were a Bell," that were originally released as a single, plus an alternate take of "Until I Met You."] Scott Yanow

SARAH VAUGHAN - Sarah Sings Soulfully (1965-1992) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Sarah Vaughan's final Roulette session before going back to Mercury was one of her best. Some of the tunes (such as "A Taste of Honey," "What Kind of Fool Am I" and "The Good Life") do not look all that promising, but Vaughan was near the peak of her powers during this era. Plus her renditions of "I Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out to Dry," "Sermonette," "Gravy Waltz," "Moanin'," "'Round Midnight" and "Midnight Sun" are classics. Assisted by a sextet arranged by Gerald Wilson and including organist Ernie Freeman, trumpeter Carmell Jones, and the tenor of Teddy Edwards, Vaughan is brilliant throughout this highly enjoyable LP. SARAH VAUGHAN - The Benny Carter Sessions (1994) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Sarah Vaughan's two Roulette orchestra sessions that featured Benny Carter arrangements (The Explosive Side of Sarah Vaughan and The Lonely Hours) are reissued in full on The Benny Carter Sessions from 1994. The unidentified musicians (which include strings on the second set) are chiefly accompanists behind the frequently miraculous singer. The "explosive" album (which mostly does not live up to its billing) is the better of the two dates with more variety and highlights in songs such as "Honeysuckle Rose," "The Lady's in Love with You," "I Can't Give You Anything but Love" and a spirited "Trolley Song." The later set is more ballad-oriented and less memorable, though it does offer a classic rendition of "Solitude." Throughout, Vaughan is in prime voice, overcoming the weaker material and uplifting the more superior songs. Not essential but Sarah Vaughan fans will enjoy this reissue. Scott Yanow

SARAH VAUGHAN - Verve Jazz Masters 18 (1994) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Vol. 18 of the Verve Jazz Masters series features Sarah Vaughan for the most part singing bop and swinging pretty hard. Though not known at all as a Verve artist (only At Mister Kelly's), these tracks were mined from her dates in the '50s and '60s for Mercury/EmArcy and Roulette. Of the 16 selections, there's a good mix of small-group sessions with such notables as trumpeter Clifford Brown and saxophonist Cannonball Adderley and big bands led by Quincy Jones or members of the Count Basie Orchestra. Nary a string section is heard until the closer, "Misty." You get pure swing, not the sappy Sassy, during "Cherokee," "Shulie a Bop," "Lullaby of Birdland," "Just One of Those Things" (from the At Mister Kelly's date), and "Sassy's Blues," among others. This is a very good compilation to find and keep. Michael G. Nastos

SARAH VAUGHAN - Verve Jazz Masters 42 : Sarah Vaughan The Jazz Sides (1995) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Stunning. Romantic. Joyous. Uplifting. Affectionate. This is certainly quite a collection of standards performed by one of the elite jazz singers, the legendary Sarah Vaughan. Renowned for her three-octave range, engaging voice, and alluring presence, Vaughan lights up the stage in many of the tunes, recorded live in clubs grateful for her appearance throughout her singing career. Beginning with the showstopper "I Cried for You," Vaughan brings her backup band up another notch, with a breathtaking performance in the highest measure of esteem. The follow-up, "I Feel Pretty," is quite a phenomenal sleeper hit. "I feel pretty, so pretty/I feel pretty and witty and bright/I'm so pretty/I hardly can't believe it's real," sings Vaughan with a enigmatic sense of charisma, perhaps her most shimmering quality on stage. The third track, slower in measure with a riveting piano accompaniment, shows off her tenderness, as she sings, "Words can't describe the way that I feel for you." Other songs featured in this timeless compilation are her eloquent renditions of "Pennies From Heaven," "Body and Soul," and "Over the Rainbow." In the liner notes, the critic Robert Baird points out that this album is filled with standards, adding, "(B)ut in front of a quartet or quintet, Vaughan and her gift turned these favorites into jazz of the highest order."

This disc is composed of Vaughan's work with smaller groups, recorded between the years 1954 and 1963. Songs like "Doodlin'," though, which she sang with the Count Basie Orchestra, are filled with nuances of her favorite influences, including the horn players Dizzy Gillespie and Chuck Bird. In her rendition of "Prelude to a Kiss," Vaughan brings forth a wonderful flair of passion, pondering the lyrics, "It's just a simple melody, with nothing fancy, nothing much/You could turn it into a symphony, a Schubert tune, with a Gershwin touch" (well-written lyrics for the Duke Ellington tune by the preeminent lyricists Irving Gordon and Irving Mills). With resonance and flavor shining through her brilliant vocal style, over time she developed into one of the great jazz "divas." With strong belief in his words, Leonard Feather said, "(S)he was our Jessye Norman, our Leontyne Price," concluding, "The operatic beauty of her sound was like nothing that had preceded it, and it is unlikely that anything comparable will ever succeed it." The tearjerking "Misty" is perhaps the most undauntable performance of this collection. It is here that she reaches the pivotal summit of her art. This tune written and composed by Erroll Garner became a staple of Vaughan's sets early on in her career. With attentive listening, one can feel both sides of Vaughan's complex personality, that of a sassy diva and a passionate virtuoso. This record marks the definitive character of the legendary Sarah Vaughan in her most sensational form. Shawn M. Haney

SARAH VAUGHAN | LESTER YOUNG - One Night Stand : The Town Hall Concert 1947 (1997) MONO | The Performance Series | FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

This 1997 CD has music from a previously unreleased Town Hall concert. The program is split between the Lester Young sextet and Sarah Vaughan with the two principals only coming together on the final song, "I Cried for You." The recording quality is listenable, if not flawless, and it features the two giants at interesting points in their careers. Tenor great Lester Young sounds excellent on his seven features, but his backup group is sometimes a bit shaky, particularly during uncertain moments on "Just You, Just Me" and "Sunday"; bassist Rodney Richardson does not mesh well with the eccentric pianist Sadik Hakim. The young Roy Haynes is fine, although some of his "bombs" are overrecorded, while trumpeter Shorty McConnell comes across as a second-rate Howard McGhee, sincere but streaky. But the reason to acquire this CD is Sarah Vaughan, who at age 23 was already a marvel; what a voice! Very influenced by Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker, Vaughan mostly lays way behind the beat during her ballad-oriented performances, swirling between notes like a first altoist and often settling on very unlikely (and boppish) notes. She gives the impression that she could do anything with her voice, and some of her flights (particularly on "Don't Blame Me," "I Cover the Waterfront" and "Mean to Me") border on the miraculous. SARAH VAUGHAN - You're Mine You (1962-1997) FLAC (tracks), lossless

This LP finds Sarah Vaughan backed by big-band and string arrangements from Quincy Jones that could easily have been used for a Frank Sinatra date. Vaughan's voice is typically wondrous and sometimes a bit excessive on the ballads (some may find her slightly overblown version of "Maria" a bit difficult to sit through), but in top form on the more swinging numbers. In the repertoire are such tunes as "The Best Is Yet to Come," "The Second Time Around" and "Baubles, Bangles and Beads." More of a middle-of-the-road pop date than a creative jazz session (the personnel is not given), the set is not essential but should please those who love the sound of Vaughan's remarkable voice. The final two "bonus" numbers ("One Mint Julep" and "Mama, He Treats Your Daughter Mean") were originally released as a single. Scott Yanow
